If you love the Scottish accent, words and place names then you'll love these audio books. A friend said she'd "marry just the accent".
I have never "read" an Ian Rankin novel. I listen to the audio books in the car and there's always one on the go. So for me, it's often more about the journey than the destination.
The box is small, neat and closes snugly in a very satisfying way. It contains the first 10 Inspector Rebus stories. Each story runs between 3 and 5 CDs. Each story begins with a short introduction by Ian Rankin, which is a nice touch.
Even though I know it's James Macpherson or Bill Patterson reading, I can't help but visualise John Hanna as Rebus. He played Rebus in the TV series. The audio books work better than the TV series, because we can "hear" Rebus's thoughts and insights - always a problem when adapting novels to the screen. The readers and the stories are excellent.
I would have given this set 5-out-of-5 except for a manufacturing fault on the last 3 minutes of the final track of "Knots and Crosses". To their credit (and my visa card) Amazon promptly shipped a replacement box. But it was also faulty - clearly not their fault, but what to do ? No amount of pass-the-airmail-parcel could correct a bad recording. Finally a friend recovered the faulty track using CD-Paranoia software - so now I know how the first story ends, and this boxed set gets 4-out-of-5 :-)
