4.0 out of 5 stars Biohazard - Reborn In Defiance 9 Mar 2012
By Gentlegiantprog TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Biohazard are a long running and classic band among fans of a certain generation, who came out in the early nineties with a sound that mixed together NY-Hardcore, Thrash Metal and Rap Music, resulting in a then innovative and distinct sound. They released eight studio albums until they temporarily disbanded after 2005's magnificent but critically panned Means To An End album.

After a seven-year gap between studio albums; the band got back together, this time with the `Classic Line-Up' for the first time on record since 1994's State Of The World Address album, to release 2012's Reborn In Defiance.

While you may expect the Classic Line-Up to put out an album that mostly sounds like the band's first three records, the end result is actually closer to a mixture of everything they've been doing since then, and all the separate styles that they've incorporated into their sound along the way.

Stylistically half the album, including the pre-released tracks `Skullcrusher' and `Vengeance Is Mine,' is very much in the same mould as their previous album Means To An End, in terms of straight forward crushing and enjoyable, grooving Hardcore Metal, in a sort of post-Hatebreed reinterpretation of their signature sound. The other half of the album is a lot more melodic and slightly experimental in a similar vein to the lighter moments from their Uncivilization and New World Disorder albums.

If you are just a casual Biohazard fan then unfortunately this album probably won't radically change your opinion of the band, it isn't an absolute Tour De Force that will go down in history as an undoubted classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Born into a long and strong past 27 Jan 2013
By Matt182
Format:Audio CD
Reborn in defiance is the band's 9th studio album and the first Biohazard album to be released in 7 years, since 2005's Means to an end. The band decided to call it a day after making Means to an end but then reformed in 2008 to do a tour. After that they decided to make an album and here we have it. This album is the first to feature the original band lineup from the first 3 albums, with Bobby Hambel deciding to leave after State of the world address. Unfortunately front-man Evan Seinfeld decided to leave the band after this album was recorded. Evan was definitely a staple part of the band's sound so it's the beginning of something reborn but it's the end of an era too. I think that bittersweet feeling is felt throughout the album's sound. The album was released on the Nuclear Blast record label worldwide except for North America and the release date is still to be announced! This will surely have a negative effect on the US fanbase.

The album artwork is reminiscent of the debut album which featured a baby crying surrounded by the debris of a fallout. This cover features a baby in the womb but I'm sure the band were inferring a return to the original form with that reference. Obviously it represents the band's rebirth. I thought it was also the 2nd album to not feature the band logo, but it appears on the foetus's bicep! The album artwork throughout the booklet is of X-ray style images featuring skeletons in various scenes. As a result of Evan's absence with the release of this album he is not featured in the Thank you section, as he is no longer an actual member. The album is dedicated to Peter 'Steele' Ratajczyk who was a mentor and a big influence in the band's early days.

5.0 out of 5 stars Down for Life 25 Jan 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It's been a while since an album from Biohazard but one thing is sure; it was worth the wait, and then some. Having recently re-formed, this album marks the return of all four original band members and what an album they have made. This is one of those albums you can't imagine being without one you have heard it. Every song sounds the way only New York's finest could make it- heavy, thumping, well crafted hardcore/ metal with their unique infusion of rap. Reborn in Defiance sees the band blend melody perfectly with their hallmark heavy, thumping sound to produce perhaps their best album to date. This must surely be granted the title of best album of 2012. I have been into Biohazard for twenty years now and this album reminds me why; here is to another twenty! Down for Life Biohazard! Buy this album now and play it loud!

5.0 out of 5 stars TREMENDOUS - MUST BE HEARD! THEIR BEST RIFF-ORIENTED ALBUM SINCE URBAN DISCIPLINE AND SOTWA 24 Jan 2012
By Johnny Angel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is EASILLY a 4.5 star album - this must be heard to be fully appreciated and respected. Reading online reviews (great, or undeserving negative) won't do this masterpiece any justice. EVEN I HAD MY DOUBTS AT FIRST!

Put this album on shuffle (as to not accidentally forget or not get to some of the last few tracks on the album, as those are some of the best songs!) and trust me you will be rockin' out and headbangin' to many of these songs!

AWESOME, AWESOME balls rockin' songs such as 'Reborn', 'Vengeance is Mine', 'Skullcrusher', 'Come Alive', and 'Never Give In' - chock FULL of riffs (did I say RIFFS?!), thunderous production, fluid and blistering leads by a returning Bobby Hambel, and in-your-face lyrics and vocals mainly from Billy, but Evan shines as well in the dual approaches.

'Vows of Redemption' has this incredible, ambient atmospheric 'piano' intro and outro which totally makes the entire song worth listening to on repeat. Again, I can only try to describe so much - the album must be listened to to be fully appreciated and enjoyed!

Two songs which were punchy yet had cool 'sing along choruses' mid song (almost can hear or envision a live crowd in there!) were 'Decay' and 'Reborn'. Check them out!

The last track, an instrumental called 'Season the Sky' - is also a masterpiece. Almost more melodic hard rock - a perfect closer to this album.

Production is stellar, a huge improvement from their last album Means to an End - which was a good album in itself, but it suffered from sound and production flaws - as it had to be re-recorded since the original masters of that album had been destroyed in a fire. Reborn in Defiance sounds much more ballsy and crisp!

If I can find any flaws (if there are any, these are just my opinion), the only two songs I did not really enjoy were "Waste Away' and 'You Were Wrong.'. I will be giving them a few more spins to see if they grow on me, they just didn't seem as hair-raising and headbangin' as the rest of the album. Others may enjoy these songs, but in my opinion THUS FAR, while they were decent - they just didn't grab me, and 'You Were Wrong' just seemed to get redundant by the 6-minute mark. HOWEVER - by track 11 and 12 - NOW THOSE TRACKS ARE TREMENDOUS. It was almost like a shot of adrenaline to me after tracks 9 and 10. Skullcrusher and Never Give In are a total punch in the face!

This is a great all-around hardcore, metal, hard rock release with some different elements mixed in on a few songs not previously used very much by Biohazard, BUT THEY WORK. Give it a listen! Great album artwork, too!

Picks: 'Vengeance is Mine', 'Skullcrusher' 'Never Give In', 'Reborn', 'Come Alive', and 'Vows of Redemption.'

It is hard NOT TO LIKE this album. There is just so much meat and potatoes, and again - the brilliant guitar riffs!!

If you are just a casual Biohazard fan then unfortunately this album probably won't radically change your opinion of the band, it isn't an absolute Tour De Force that will go down in history as an undoubted classic. If you are a fairly strong Biohazard fan however then this is a nice addition to the catalogue that will keep you happy, a welcome collection of some more Biohazard songs that ties together somewhat the different styles of the previous few albums and brings the various experimentations therein to a logical conclusion.

Overall; Reborn In Defiance is a good album, it isn't out and out the best thing that the band have ever done and it isn't likely to win over anyone who already dislikes Biohazard, but is certainly worth checking out if you already follow the band and is nowhere near a disappointment. I already like the band a lot and have found it to be a pretty enjoyable album that gets better with repeat listens.

5.0 out of 5 stars SOLID ALBUM 3 Feb 2012
By Mick Schnabel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Although Evan is supposedly gone from the band, and this may be the last Biohazard album for a while-this album is SICK! I'm sure alot of the old skoolers will hate on this record (I AM an old skooler-loved em since day one)The album is very well produced and has some sweet riffs and great singing in it (yep, actual singing-kinda) I was extremely skeptical of it at first, which sometimes, helps make an album even better when you don't set such high expectations (Especially since Biohazard albums of the past were a little hit and miss IMO) I think this record is solid through and through. Some stand out tracks for me were;"Decay","Killing Me","Countdown Doom","Vows Of Redemption"(nice bluesy-type riffage),and "You Were Wrong" is a track that you wouldn't really expect out of Biohazard-but it works, and kicks a**.So crank this sombitch and ROCK!!

4.0 out of 5 stars not exactly what I hoped for?! 17 Jan 2012
By john F'n doe - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
this just doesn't strike the same chords as the old school biohazard first three cds did.
i think means to an end was more old school than this-it has moments of greatness that you go this sound like the old style then it's gone.evan's gone left several month ago never to return i guess but this cd seams to be over thought not the street style biohazard tunes and groove you might expect from the original members.the edge seams to be missing they seam to have to have done a cro-mags alpha omega i think-maybe it'll grow on me but I expect biohazard to jump out a grab my attention!I'm dissapointed but I wouldn't call it a flop, but it's not great by a long shot either?!
4.0 out of 5 stars Best Since 90s 16 Oct 2013
By justin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Not a hardcore Biohazard listener (pun intended), but it's best material they've put out since the 90s. Always thought of them as a "pretty good" band. This album is just as good as Urban Discipline and SotWA. Didn't care for anything after New World Disorder until this, maybe it was the nu metal sound they picked up starting with Uncivilization. Definitely helps having Bobby back on lead guitar. Starts out strong with Vengeance is Mine. A little weak in the middle but finishes strong. (Not counting first and last songs as they seem like filler.) Other good songs are Killing Me, Vows of Redemption, Waste Away, You Were Wrong, and Never Give In.
