4.0 out of 5 stars An ongoing project., 26 Jun 2004

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Reboot: Daemon Rising & My Two Bobs [DVD] [1995] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
If, like me, you've been watching Reboot since the early days of series 1 or 2 then you'll be aware that the series has changed radically over the years. What started as a child oriented CGI cartoon mutated into a classy, surreal and witty bit of subversive anime by series 3. In fact series 3 was so adult oriented in places that it was cancelled in the UK halfway through so we're lucky that 4 DVDs exist to reveal its magic (see Reboot series 3). When series 3 ended (with the most astonishing Gilbert and Sullivan reference imaginable) it was uncertain whether any more episodes would ever be produced but a few years later the long hoped for series 4 appeared in the US as two movie length features and that's what is on this DVD. The advances in CGI that occurred in the intervening time are exploited to good effect and the plots, whilst not as radical as the middle section of series 3, are still entertaining and way above the heads of most kids. As ever, it helps to know something about computer architecture because the subject permeates much of the humour as does references to games, movies and TV.
The disc is a flipper (first I've seen in years) with an episode per side, extras are non existent bar some character profiles and the image quality is excellent. There's a Dolby Digital soundtrack too which is nice!
Reboot is more than the sum of its parts: it's a classy bit of experimental art and will hopefully continue to series 5 and beyond if someone puts up the money. It has, to put it mildly, an international cult following so there's an audience ready and waiting.
Stay Frosty!

5.0 out of 5 stars Season 4 at last!, 23 Oct 2004
This review is from: Reboot: Daemon Rising & My Two Bobs [DVD] [1995] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
If your a fan of this show, then buy it. If your a lover of CGI shows, than buy it. Or if your simply looking for a fun show that has action, adventure, comedy, and drama, then buy it. The dvd its self doesn't have a ton of specail features, but the show itself makes this dvd worth buying. ReBoot has always been underated, and yet it is one of the best tv shows ever. I just hope we get seasons 1 and 2 released as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great value, but not as good as seasons 1 - 3, 5 May 2004
By David M. Rogge "drogge" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Reboot: Daemon Rising & My Two Bobs [DVD] [1995] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
The double sided DVD has the two feature length ReBoot movies which made up season four of the series. "Daemon Rising" and "My Two Bobs" are, in turn, a good action flick (guest starring hexadecimal and - of course - daemon) and a comedy/romance/action flick (guest starring megabyte/megaframe). Both are widescreen (which is very cool) and the CGI animation is better than ever. But...

Where Seasons 1 and 2 were feet finding missions, and Season 3 was a wonderful parody session (of games and movies) Season 4 just doesn't have "legs" in these areas --- a take off of Austin Powers, a take off of Indiana Jones?? That the games are pushed way into the background is a sign that I think even the creators knew they'd ran out of steam on these topics.

For fans, the season is great in that you get dropped right into the action --- but if you are new to the show, you'll be somewhat lost. As a fan myself, this isn't a problem, but it may be if you are new to the show.

One sad aspect: this is the last series of the show, but it ends on a significant cliffhanger (not quite Twin Peaks style, but getting up there).

Technically, the sound and picture are great - no issues there at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Bang and a Whimper, 18 May 2004
By Gord Wilson "alivingdog.com" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Reboot: Daemon Rising & My Two Bobs [DVD] [1995] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
"This is the way the world ends," penned poet T.S. Eliot, "not with a bang but a whimper." The wonderful series that was ReBoot ends with both: the bang of the two full-length movies on this DVD, and the whimper from Frisket and ReBoot's gazillion fans. Why four stars? Five because it's ReBoot, and three because this DVD should be better than it is (averaging four stars). It looks like ReBoot has been listening to its critics, and that's a bad thing. After parodying every TV, movie and social situation, ReBoot is in danger of becoming a parody of itself.

As we all know, season three was "edgier" than seasons one and two and formed a continuous story. But after reading my ReBoot Guide, a fan e-mailed me asking how to get the first two seasons. Why? He felt the third season was too "edgy" but wanted his kid to see how great ReBoot was (when it ran on ABC). V4.0 (this stands for "version 4.0" but Amazon calls it "volume 4," confusing it with the fourth DVD of the third season) is "edgier" than the third season, as if someone has been reading bad graphic novels and got their puns from the ash can outside Comedy Central. Former ReBoot producer, Chris Brough, is not listed in the credits: perhaps his was the restraining hand that kept back such excesses. When it first appeared, ReBoot was widely hailed as fresh and new, and had nothing to prove. This ReBoot tries to prove it anyway, and it tries too hard. Oddly enough, ReBoot could still please everyone. Run these movies on Cartoon Network's Toonami or Adult Swim blocks, rerun the first two seasons on the teen or evening slots, and bring out the first two seasons on DVD. Critics au contraire, ReBoot has always had something most other CGI series don't--soul. It's always been about Dot, Bob, Enzo, and (whimper)--oh yeah--Frisket.

2.0 out of 5 stars Audio issue requires a fix, 7 May 2004
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Reboot: Daemon Rising & My Two Bobs [DVD] [1995] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
For both features of this double-sided disc, the sound is "dopplered down," giving all of the dialog a very low pitch. Have seen this expressed on a few other websites but no official word yet from Anchor Bay Entertainment. Not so much a big deal for folks watching this for the first time, but for people familiar with the Reboot series and characters . . . it's incredibly distracting. Rated down because of the defect. Overall, a great DVD for the price. A little sparse on the extras, but it's just nice to be able to get more of this series on DVD. I encourage anyone that has this same issue with their DVD to contact Anchor Bay Entertainment via their website and make them aware of the issue and hopefully prompt them to provide replacements.
