Book Description

10 Oct 2010
When her dreams are smashed by an assignment which would leave her trapped in a job far beneath her abilities, Eleanor has nowhere to turn. The Imperial system prides itself on perfection, leaving no space for complaints. In desperation she rejects her assignment and the quality of life she would have been guaranteed - then, suddenly free for the first time in her life, finds her imagination captured by legends which tell of a secret society of elite assassins. Rebellion is the first of three novels in the Chronicles of Charanthe series.

More About the Author

Rachel lives with her husband in the Cotswolds. When not writing, she's probably out looking for the next adventure, or possibly blogging about the last one. She collects skills the way some collect stamps, and enjoys getting lost in as many countries as possible.

Rachel's first novel, Rebellion, was published on 10th October 2010 (because, well, she's a bit of a geek and it seemed like a cool date).

About the Author

Rachel lives with her husband in the middle of the English Cotswolds. When she's not writing, she likes to gather inspiration by seeking out life's little adventures: getting lost in as many different countries as possible, collecting skills like other people collect stamps, and generally marvelling at the variety the world has to offer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rebellion 22 Mar 2011
By iceni
Format:Paperback
This is an original debut novel, a fantasy story that creates a living, breathing world that is almost tangible. Unlike the majority of fantasy novels there is no magic or fantastic beasts in Charanthe but a fascinating culture that is believable and absorbing.
I found myself impatient to get through the pages to find out what would happen to the main character - Eleanor - in her attempt to be accepted into the the assasins' school and I look forward to learning more about both her and the society in which she lives in Rachel's future works.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beliveable fantasy - just my cup of tea 31 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
I'm a voracious fiction reader, most often in the historically-researched and fantasy genres. Rebellion is a wonderful novel which fits neatly into neither. It's mostly fantasy, but without the traditional "high fantasy" elements of dragons, magicians and other humanoid races. Rachel has created a rich world of her own, drawing on earth's history, but changing enough to make it truly her own creation and stop the reader filling in any blanks.

The characters cover the gamut of humanity, including the dark underbelly that we often prefer to ignore. Rachel has carefully trodden the line of what is necessary for dramatic tension and resolution without straying into gratuitous violence, gore and depravity. The main protagonist is a unusual young woman, but she too has her flaws, making her all the more believable.

There are few people I wouldn't recommend this too: an excellent debut novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unputdownable, great read 4 Mar 2011
By Lakoma
Format:Paperback
Rebellion is Rachel Cotterill's debut novel. It's quite a read and it definitely is unputdownable. You just need to keep reading!
It's set in a medieval-type fantasy empire of Charanthe, and the main heroine, Eleanor, is a young girl trying to find her place in a men's world. Her adventures take unexpected turns before she ends up in a place she most desired to be in - a school for professional assassins.

I believe it's a book aimed at young adults and therefore it's not a very challenging piece of writing, but very satisfying if you've got taste for adventure and action. It's literally packed with action and lots of details when it comes to weaponry, puzzles and all the crafts that Eleanor excels at. And it makes you want more - I can't wait to read the second part of the story and I'm really glad that there's also a third volume in the pipeline.

A few things that would make this novel even more absorbing: more details on historical and political background. Charanthe Empire seems to be a very complex and interesting world, I hope there'll be more in the novels to come. A little bit more insight into character's psyche. I'd like to know Eleanor better and that includes her anxieties. Some events are resolved a bit too quickly considering building up the tension and it leaves the reader somewhat disappointed - we want to see Eleanor facing the most unimaginable challenges.

But there's still more to come and I'm sure we readers are in for a treat. Let's see what Revolution brings!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant fantasy debut. 9 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback
I haven't got much more to say that hasn't already been said by other reviewers. This is a fantastic fantasy book, brilliantly paced, characters you can empathise with and just will to succeed. If you buy one book this year - make it this one.

Can't wait for the rest of the series, I can say now that they're gonna be great.

I have just finished reading Rachel Cotterill first book in the series: Chronicles of Charanthe and the First Book is REBELLION .

I have been waiting to read this book for several years after I knew Rachel was writing it, and it was everything I had hoped for and far more!

The author was able to build up a real working world that you feel there. Fully in her world, it is not just the descriptions of the world around her character Eleanor but details as types of food and cultures that she has created a living world for the reader to step into and join Eleanor as she leaves school to start on a life full of adventure.

Wanting to leave the comforts of a government school and a job already selected for her, Eleanor has her hart set upon becoming an Assassin which is not the sort of thing a nice young girl should even know about let alone dream of becoming!

As the book progresses you feel that you grow up with Eleanor as she makes her way through life.

So without giving any more away all I can say is that this is a must read, and I am personally looking forward to the next in the series.

This is a debut novel in a projected series of three. Genre/period: a fantasy novel set in a mediaeval type world - don't let that put you off, there's no strange thee/thou anachronistic language, jarring juxtapositions or monsters and dragons. Eleanor's a feisty character who's determined to become an Assassin against the odds. The storyline revolves around her with an appropriate level of detail and urgency as she pushes forward. Twists and turns aplenty - this isn't poor quality derivative writing but storytelling of high quality focussed on someone you want to know and you're in the thick of it there with her. Be prepared to read it in one sitting - it's that nail biting and absorbing.

A marvellous mix of Hunger Games and Assassin's Creed. A great, flowing read, difficult to put down. Should be a film. Looking forward to starting the next book in the series soon.
