Khaled is the "King of Raï" - the world's most famous raï singer and the singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist responsible for making the genre as popular as it is today.
"Rebel of Raï" focuses on the beginnings of Khaled's career featuring the key songs he recorded in the late 70s, 80s & early 90s. This is the period when Khaled
was arguably at his creative best, boldly incorporating western instruments and studio techniques into raï.
It was Khaled's modernization of raï which helped make it popular with Algerian youth of the 1980s and which in turn saw the Algerian government declare it one of the country's official native music styles. Khaled articulated socially progressive themes into his music rebelling against the constraints of the older generations and
more traditional Islam, much to the chagrin of the old establishment. As a result of this Khaled received death threats forcing him to move to Paris in 1986.
His self titled album "Khaled" (1992) established his reputation as a superstar in France and among Algerian emigrants around the world. His audience has continued
to expand since then and Khaled has achieved superstar status around the world. Khaled has subsequently re-recorded many songs found on "Rebel of Raï: the early years" yet the versions contained here are the originals and the best. They capture a man at his creative peak, hell-bent on forging a new future for raï to take
this music into the 21st Century.

Bleedin'nora, there i was, in me local sainsbury's, with this freshly loaded onto me mp4 player, and I couldn't stop dancin' to it.Security came up and asked me what I was doing in front of the new potatoes section, and I simply couldn't answer him.You must get this,boys 'n girls!

This is the only early Khaled compilation you will ever need. 25 tracks including the ultra-rare debut tune "Trig Lycee", for this price you cannot go wrong. Intense, early rai at its best

I got this album last week and have been listening to it all weekend, on repeat! - and I have to say it is THE best collection of Khaled's early work - before he had his worldwide hit Didi. The perfect introduction to the original and authentic sounds of this superstar. (So contrary to current download trends, this comes in one handy package - indispensable!).
