Around late 2003, this was my first John Miles (JM) CD purchase & I had listened to the audio-cassette in the late seventies! I can bear witness to the fact that when JM first hit the world stage in 1976 he made a tremendous impact. He toured with Elton John, the Rolling Stones, Jethro Tull, and the lead singer of the seventies "super-group" and has had hits with "Highfly" and his masterpiece "Music". Sadly, some could not see past the type-cast image of "Music" to see what a great all-round talented musician he is.
I have often talked about the track "Music" and, in it; he (JM) has managed to capture the excitement and majesty of orchestral rock in a track which builds to a sensational climax, with superb guitar work, brass and soaring, heavenly backing vocals. John Miles vocals are simply melodic & soothing with a touch of class.
In fact, he is not just a good singer/songwriter but his vocal, guitar and keyboard skills are also excellent. In my reviews of JM, I have stated that he has been the most under-rated guitarist - just listen to his astonishing solo performance in "Pull the Damn Thing Down", itself is one of the high points of this album. Overall, the Album contains excellent songs within a different range of styles.
No other track has ever hit the chart success of "Music", but JM has great talent to write exceptionally good songs and makes great use of dynamics, giving everything he touches has a classic feel to it.
To conclude, the archetype image of James Dean as a "Rebel" JM's - debut Album and now is you chance get beyond that archetypal image and find out what a gifted all - round & accomplished musician JM really is.
