Review

The unique perspective which the author brings to his robust saga of Pembrokeshire country folk ..... manages to make even the most familiar aspects of the Rebecca tale seem fresh, and arguably this is the most successful of the series to date. Once again the action builds to a dramatic denouement on the slopes of Carningli, and in the final showdown the spirited Martha once again confounds all those foolish enough to think of conspiring against her and her flock of guardian angels. -- Keith Johnson --Pembrokeshire Life

The magic of Martha Morgan and the mystical mountain of Carningli continues to weave its spell. In Rebecca and the Angels author Brian John's storytelling reaches a rich maturity. We are swept along in a gripping tale that often leaves you breathless. I'm delighted that Brian's books have been snapped up by Transworld Publishers and that readers throughhout the world will now be able to share in Martha's magic. -- Doris Goddard, Western Telegraph --Western Telegraph

The author has researched his period well and is at ease with his genre. The pace is, like the Welsh climate, gentle one minute, tempestuous the next, ranging from blood, battles, intrigue and treachery to the whimsical, fly, romantic and mystical. The author's obvious appreciation of the Welsh countryside comes across to the reader in some excellent descriptive prose; indeed, like its heroine, this is a book of many parts. -- Norma Penfold --Gwales.com (Welsh Books Council)

Product Description

Martha Morgan, the Mistress of Plas Ingli, has a premonition of grave danger to come. As the effects of poverty and starvation afflict the neighbourhood Martha tries to influence the corrupt Turnpike Trusts, who are compounding the miseries of the poor by building new and illegal toll gates and rigorously collecting tolls. In 1839 the destruction of the tollgate at Efailwen triggers off a phase of rioting which spreads across West Wales. The riots are always led by somebody called Rebecca, and the rioters are always referred to as her daughters. For a time there is guerrilla warfare with the police and the army out-manoevred by men who know every inch of the countryside. Martha is never far from the action, and as the riots spread she and her family and servants are sucked into a murky world of intrigue and betrayal. With considerable heroism on the part of her nearest and dearest, and with not a little luck, Martha manages to keep out of trouble. But then she gets too close to the action. As the riots build to a climax, she decides on a final foolhardy gesture, and things start to go badly wrong..........

Winston Graham wrote marvellous books about Poldark in Cornwall. Brian John has Martha Morgan in West Wales. They are equally as good as the wonderful Poldark novels but Brian has a different style and a woman as heroine instead of a man. The descriptions of the mountain and surrounding areas in Newport are excellent. The historical situations are fascinating and Martha is a woman who I would love to have known. Brian's style of writing is fresh and original - I hope he writes much more in future. Keep writing Mr John!!

Welsh historical romance 2 Nov 2009

Here's another in the excellent series about Angel Mountain and its inhabitants in Pembrokeshire about Jane Austen's time. All the local intrigues, jealousies, tragedies, and triumphs of any small society play out here as neighbours plot to take over valuable farms and estates, ruin reputations, while others work to reconcile, see visions, and try to live and work in peace. Such interesting characters and such an accurate depiction of the locale. There are maps so you can go right to the area and see those far views from the mountain if you are fortunate enough to visit beautiful Wales. The author weaves current history throughout the series, so there IS an invasion of French soldiers, and there ARE changes in law that affect the characters. There's also a strong and very Welsh sense of the rightness of equality across class and gender. Very readable, exciting, interesting, informative, and fun.
