After reading all of Laurens' Cynster series, it was absolutely wonderful to read this story which I initially discovered in a book by Laurens called ' a season for marriage'. The story of Lenore is fascinating in that although she tries to efface herself when helping her rakehell brothers host their wild parties, and definitely not taking part in them herself, she finds herself the target of amorous pursuit by one of her brothers friends who percieves her beauty despite her disguise. This book is like her others in that there are wonderfully sensual scenes and well paced story. The books/stories of the Lester family were in fact written before her Cynster series but contain the elements of passion, intregue and masterful men that we have come to know and love in her current books. If you want to find out more about the Lester family, the story of Lenore's brother Jack can be found in 'a season for marriage' as well as this book which has been published as a single. enjoy the read. I did.

Stephanie Laurens' book is a delight to behold, to have and to read....once started upon, it is difficult to give up her books....till you have completed the last page....

I especially like her 'Bar Cynster' and 'Bastion Club' collection.....it is just so sad that her books are not so readily available back here in India from where i hail....

I am steadily buidling up my collection of Bar Cynster Novels, and display them with pride almost as they were my own family album....her female protagonists are a delight to women folk even in this era...making us want to go back in time.

A positive delight.....

At the outset of her writing career, well before she created the Cynster family and their friends and relatives, Stephanie Laurens wrote a trilogy of Regency romance novels about three siblings from the Lester family, Lenore, Jack, and Harry.

This is the first book in that trilogy, which consists of

1) This book, "The Reasons for Marriage" (Lenore),
2) A Lady of Expectations (Jack), and
3) An Unwilling Conquest (Harry).

The whole trilogy has also been published in one volume, as "Rogues' Reform: The Reasons for Marriage, a Lady of Expectations, an Unwilling Conquest," and the first two as "A Season for Marriage (STP - Mills & Boon lead)."

There is a fourth book in the series. One of the supporting characters in these novels, particularly "An Unwilling Conquest," is Lord Philip Ruthven, and Miss Laurens subsequently wrote a romance for him, entitled A Comfortable Wife. In that story, Lord Philip runs into a young lady who is determined to prove that she would make him a comfortable wife in the belief that this is what he wants. Fortunately for them both, in this belief she is entirely mistaken ...

This is the first Stephanie Laurens book I have read. I was enthralled by it from the beginning. Jason was very much in line with my favourite type of Regency hero. Lenore was also my kind of independent heroine. She had spent some years running a large household for her invalid father and older brothers. These two were confirmed rakes and often held country-house parties, which Lenore organised efficiently. To stop her becoming the object of her brothers' friends gallantry, she dressed very conservatively and unbecomingly. Jason required a wife to run his household and produce an heir - necessary now that his younger brother had died at Waterloo. He was a long established rake and did not look for - or wish - a love match.

As with all Regency romances, there was always going to be a happy ending, but the twists and turns of the relationship made compelling reading, and I found it hard to put down. Since this a good-sized book - excellent value - this caused quite a bit of disruption to my schedule. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes this genre of book.

I much prefer the early works of Stephanie Laurens to the later books which are all variations on the same plot. In this story the Duke of Eversleigh decides he must find a wife to ensure the succession now that his younger brother has been killed in action. Having enjoyed the company of many other men's wives he knows what attributes he does not want in his wife and cold bloodedly sets out to find someone who meets his criteria. Lenore Lester has been mistress of her fathers house from a young age and has taken pains to stay out of the way of any potential suitors. Aquainted with her brothers and knowing Lenore to potentially fulfil his criteria the Duke accepts an invitation to a weeks house party so he can investigate her suitability. It's not a wildly passionate love at first sight sort of book but an enjoyably written story of how the two learn to love each other for themselves. He's arrogant and cold , she's a bit misguided and prissy but I liked them both hugely as characters despite that.
