Don't be deterred from reading this if you are older. As a self-confirmed bookworm in her mid 30's, I long ago discovered that books focused on young adults in high school/uni often make the best reads. This is one of them.

This book broke my heart with the physical and mental abuse Emma suffers at the hands of her vile Aunt, along with how strong she is at coping with it. Her best friend Sara is also a strong character in supporting her and helps lift the storyline away from Emma's trauma's. Her potential love interest Evan, is a sweetheart but naturally the course of true-love isn't smooth and I wanted to bang their heads together (probably not the best choice of words based on the story, but is the best description I feel!)

I very much struggled to put it down and thankfully the second book is available as the ending is a true cliffhanger and left me a little numb and with a tear in my eye.

This book was amazing. I bought it last night, and read a few pages last night not thinking much of it. Then today I picked it up for a few mins read and could not put the book down.
Emma is determined to get through high school, despite all the things that are pulling her back. She doesn't wallow in self pity or put herself first. She puts her two little cousins first, and thier happiness. She knows they are safe, and well loved, Its only Emma that deals with the beatings from her Aunt. And they are pretty scary scences in this book that broke my heart to think this really happens to people. But Emma didn't even tell her best friend, whom is her only friend. She tells Sara the rules of the friendship, Sara guesses something is not right but doesn't push.
Emma is counting the days to when she leaves her Aunts house and starts in college and is finally safe.
Insert annoying boy who worms his way in to Emma affections.
I loved this book, I'd love to give it a bad review as of the way it was ended. But it will encourage me to buy the next book to find out what happens. So it sells!
Great story, defently buy it!

Don't get me wrong I did enjoy that book. BUT...
The violance bit - I honestly cannot see anyone taking it for so long and not doing anything about it, regardless. Friends who also keep quite?! Hmm, don't think so. A bit unrealistic to me.

Neverless I have read the 2nd book and waiting for the 3rd one, so it is good. It is not 5 stars though.

"Oh Emma..."

I think I said that too many times while reading this book. My heart bled for the main character in this story. I wanted to wrap her up in my arms and take her far away from the hurt and pain of her abusive homelife. I also wanted to commit book murder!

Having had no experience in physical abuse (and very thankful of that fact), I found parts of this story difficult to read, but at the same time, I couldn't help get frustrated with it and some of Emma's reasoning left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Her Uncle was a complete waste of space and I wanted to slap him! I don't know how anyone can either be so dumb to not notice what was happening under his nose, or to the fact that he turned a blind eye which undoubtedly made him a coward.

While abuse is the strong element that consistenly runs in the background of this story, this novel also offers so much more, it's about strength and growth. As the story progresses we start to see Emma come out of the shadows and start to get noticed. There's only one reason for this and it comes in the shape of Evan. A beautiful new student with a good head on his shoulders with experiences of the world. Along with Emma's best friend, we start to witness a support system develop and a love story grow.

I don't want to go into anymore detail, as I'm quite averse to planting spoilers, but I won't lie, this book is a rollercoaster. The journey not always a pleasant one. If it does anything though, it proves beyond doubt that no-one is safe from retribution, and love will always conquer if that support system is there.

I did expect some elements of the ending... Almost! But a word of advice, make sure you have the second book in your back pocket, or already loaded on your kindle because you will want to jump on it straight away!

A very well written book for the older YA due to violent scenes and some colourful language. A very worthy 4 stars.

Ahh I really don't know where to start- I can't recommend this book ENOUGH!
I'm not usually a huge fan of teen chick flicks liked this but the intense romance story lines and unending surprises kept me hooked and unable to peel myself away from my kindle until I'd read all three books. I fell in love with the characters (especially the male ones) and feel at a loss now that it's all over. Once you have read the first you have no choice but to carry on to the second and third because you will unavoidably get as hooked as I was!
Wish there was a fourth!!

Beautiful, eloquent and articulate writing that deals with major issues in a powerful, poignant and compassionate manner. This isn't just an `issues' story - its a story of love, friendship and above all else hope.

Told in first person narrative from Emma's perspective. Emma is very timid, abandoned by her drunken mother after the death of her father a few years ago, beaten by her aunt for any reason possible; Emma is driven to succeed in order to escape and make a life for herself away from everything, she literally counts down the days til she can go to college. A talented soccer player she is hoping for a scholarship in order to make her own way through this mess. She always keeps to herself shying away from people in order to hide her life from everyone. The question of why Emma doesn't seek help is such a well developed point within the plot that while not completely agreeing with her thinking there is an understanding achieved from the explanation. Emma is utterly selfless putting the happiness of her cousins before her own. She is a very special person.

I honestly could not understand Carol's reaction to Emma at all, some explanation is given in the form of needing medication and it maybe that she is emotionally unbalanced however this is no excuse for her treatment of Emma. Carol does everything in her power to break Emma, both verbally and physically. It is quite literally stomach churning to imagine what Emma goes through. The descriptions within the narrative so powerful that it causes a physical reaction akin to a punch in the stomach. You can feel the fear pouring off Emma whenever she is around her Aunt. Very powerful writing to create such reactions, Rebecca Donovan manages to weave tension in every single page whether it be nervous or romantic.
