Product Description

Rock 'n' Reel

"This is a strong collection, withn Carson's tough voice revelling in the gems (Chip) Taylor has provided."

Album Description

Kendel Carson - she's a name, voice and fiddler/violinist who
will indeed be remembered from a first listen to Rearview Mirror Tears, her
delightful and alluring debut album on Train Wreck Records, produced by
Chip Taylor. Already a musical veteran at age 22, she's been capturing ears
and wowing audiences across her native Canada and around the globe with her
prodigious talent and luminescent aura since she joined her first musical
group at nine years old.

So it's no surprise that Rearview Mirror Tears sounds like the assured work
of a veteran artist, rich with an uncanny and winning familiarity, seducing
listeners to spin it again and again. After all, it's the work of a true
artistic natural whose soul is suffused with music, and then on Rearview
Mirror Tears is paired with another equally musical soul, master songwriter
Chip Taylor, composer of such indelible classics as "Wild Thing" and "Angel
of the Morning" and éminence grise of Americana music and the contemporary
folk-rock and singer-songwriter scenes.

It's a collaboration that at first glance may seem like a seasoned veteran
mentoring a gifted protégé, but the album soon reveals something else at
work that's even more vibrant and exciting. The way Carson inhabits the
album's songs with a full, rich presence and stamps her identity into the
music with her vocals and playing tells a different tale: An artistic union
of two friends and kindred musical souls. There's a spirit and life that
pervades Rearview Mirror Tears that can only come between two talents in
prime form enjoying their creativity in full flow.

Carson was all but destined to make memorable music from birth. Growing up
in Victoria, British Columbia, she began playing violin at the tender age
of three. Carson ascended to the upper reaches of the Canadian classical
music world while still young, appearing as a featured guest soloist with
the Victoria Symphony and later joining the National Youth Orchestra of
Canada.

At the same time as she was achieving mastery as a violinist, Carson also
became immersed in the vibrant Canadian folk scene as a fiddler, first with
the BC Fiddle Orchestra and then with her brother Tyler as The Carsons,
later to become the group Kid Carson. Her collaborative nature also later
landed her in the Juno-winning roots music band The Paperboys, with whom
she quickly became a notable member on their most recent album, The Road to
Ellenside. Her duet with lead singer Tom Landa, "Fall Down With You," was
the first video single from the disc and hit #4 on Canada's MuchMoreMusic
video channel.

After first meeting her in 2004, Taylor began offering Carson long-distance
encouragement and guidance in the months that followed. With Taylor in his
most prolific and inspired state within an already prolific and inspired
career, their creative alliance bloomed. By the time they hit the studio
for a couple of days of recording in 2006, magic wasn't just in the air but
in fact captured on the tracks they quickly laid down. On Rearview Mirror
Tears, they create an album of music that feels like it was not just meant
to be, but ready to emerge and capture the ears of the world at large. With
an organic ambience of natural artistry in unfettered flow, the sessions
became an album by an artist in first full flowering. Ranging with ease and
engaging charm through a variety of roots music modes and emotional and
musical moods, Rearview Mirror Tears is one of those exceptional creations
that feels memorable and meaningful from its very first notes.

So even though Taylor wears such hats on Rearview Mirror Tears as producer,
songwriter, singer and record label, his true role was ultimately
encouraging Carson, a fellow talent and peer (despite any age difference),
to become who she is and all that she is able to become. And as Taylor sees
it, it's ultimately Carson's artistic capacities rather than his own that
makes Rearview Mirror Tears all that it is. For Carson, her delectably
winning debut album is one of those pivotal artistic and life lessons whose
rewards will inform everything to come along her already lengthy and
fulfilling musical journey that is sure to continue for some time to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning debut album!, 24 April 2007
I don't normally buy albums without hearing the artist first but on this occasion I took the risk solely because all of the tracks were written (two co-written with Kendel Carson) and produced by the legendary Chip Taylor ("Wild Thing", "Angel Of The Morning", "Any Way That You Want Me" and many more).

Fortunately I was not disappointed and I can't remember the last time I was so knocked out by a debut album. Anyone familiar with Chip's recent solo work and his collaborations with Carrie Rodriguez (both of whom provide background vocals) will know what to expect. Supported by sterling work on lead guitar by John Platania, some great songs and superb production, Kendel's distinctive vocals make this an album not to be missed.

Like Chip's own work, this one is not easy to categorize and although it will probably fall into the Country/Americana bracket, I'm sure it will appeal to a wider audience.

Look out Lucinda, there's a new kid on the block!

4.0 out of 5 stars Please Buy This Record; there needs to be more like this!, 29 Jun 2008

This review is from: Rearview Mirror Tears (Audio CD)
The same night Bob Harris hosted Emmylou Harris to showcase All I Intended To Be on his radio programme he also played a track by Canadian group Outlaw Social. A Google or so later I found myself at the website of Kendel Carson, a peripatetic member of Outlaw Social and another band called The Paperboys as well as having a musical career independent of both. After listening to some tracks online I knew I had to buy this record to hear some more.

From such decisions sometimes stem big-time addictions, and I'm thinking at present that this is one such case.

The style is down as "Alt Country", for what it's worth (somehow it's "Rock" on Windows Media Player; how'd that happen Bill?), and whilst the songs themselves are lyrically fairly conventional, the music really stands out, with Carson's fiddle itself a good enough reason to listen on its own. Producer Chip Taylor, who also wrote most of the songs, plays guitar and harmonica, and provides backing vocals, has a very light touch, allowing Carson to "just sing", with the result that there is a very natural, raw feel to the songs, without going so far as rough and ready. Perhaps the exception to this is There's No Angel On My Shoulder, a soulful ballad which shows evidence of multi-tracking of Carson's voice. However, the balance is immediately redressed with the other track on the bonus CD, Who Wants To Ride This Train, which is straight out of the roadhouse.

The exceptions lyrically are such for different reasons. Ribbons & Bows for the lyric that gives the set its title, "Millions of young girls cryin' rearview mirror tears", a line you might expect to come from Springsteen. I Like Trucks, a song Gretchen Wilson probably wishes she'd got hold of, is a great singalong, and talking of Springsteen is presented much as was Sherry Darling on The River, with what sounds like a live audience (hard to tell from the liner notes) singing and shouting along. Similarly with I Certainly Know Why, which features a word I'm probably not allowed to say in a review on these pages, and in that way goes a step further than Kelis in unloading on an ex!

All I can add is that I can't wait for the next record, which means you've got to buy this one to make sure there is one! Yes, I mean you!

And that I hope Ms Carson's touring schedule brings her to Vancouver next February; I note with disappointment that she's several provinces to the West of me when I'm in Toronto in July this year

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album from a very talented artist, 27 May 2007
By Nicholas Robinson "Nick" (Essex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Kendel Carson plays violin and sings with the Canadian outfits The Paperboys and Outlaw Social. A fine solo debut, with some great catchy numbers (Big Trucks) and other more reflective tracks. Anyone who has seen The Paperboys on their current tour will know what a fine player she is. The vocals show that she could be a very big star. This will appeal to all folk fans and beyond. Highly recommended.
