Product Description

1588. In Lisbon the great Spanish Armada prepares to set sail for England. Along the coast of the Low Countries, the army of the Duke of Parma readies itself for embarkation. Threat is imminent. Yet behind it is a darker and more secretive game, one of espionage and murder, of treachery and deceit. The stiletto-blade to the back, the poison in the chalice, the tortuerer’s rack in the dungeon. This is the realm of the spy. And at its heart is the legendary Elizabethan spymaster Sir Francis Walsingham. One-by-one his intelligence sources vanish, day-by-day the danger to his queen and country grows. Finally, he sends the young soldier and agent Christian Hardy to discover the truth. But to reach it, Hardy must confront the deadliest of foes, the Spanish Inquisition, turncoats among his own, and the might of the enemy fleet. Time is running out. For Hardy, for England, for its sovereign queen Elizabeth...

Ingeniously plotted, written with verve and wit, this is a treat for anyone who wants to dive into the blood and guts of history - "the blows grew glutinous, the body limp". There's no sentimentality or pc airbrush, but a superb re-creation of the magnificent, brutal, & frequently sordid reality of Tudor England, in which the spy-master, Walsingham, and his agents, are busy "poisoning the minds of men and purchasing their hearts". Battle scenes and descriptions of individual combat are not for the faint-hearted. Those who feel a little queasy should heed the words of Drake, as the author recounts them: "Be English, boys! Be English!" Magnificent.

DUCKS AND DRAKES 4 Jun 2010
Format:Hardcover
I found myself in two minds about Realm,in that for the first part of the book i found that it read more as a swahbucking adventure, but some how it did not quite take me into the thick of the action, but then when we moved on to Drake and the armada and we really got into the detail and informed research that James Jackson brings to his books, that is when he won me over.I never really gelled with our lead characted Christian Hardy, who reminded me of a Errol Flynn type of leading man, it was with his side kicks that i felt more at home with,in that there was more depth to them, although you would like to know a little more of their past.So to sum up,this to me did not quite make a five, but is a very good four and i look forward to the next James Jackson outing.

Cracking good read 12 Jan 2011
By J.I.S.
Format:Paperback
Excellent story, well paced, meticulously researched and utterly convincing Elizabethan dialogue. This man knows how to write and hold the attention - from England and the machinations of Elizabeth's chief spy-master Walsingham to Portugal and Spain and the workings of the Inquisition and the Spanish Armada. With the exception of the main protagonist Christian Hardy, the characters are nicely rounded and thoroughly believable. It would have been five stars except for Mr Hardy, who I found just a little too perfect at everything.

In spare and gutsy prose, you can almost smell the ships and feel them rolling under you feet. The author breathes real life into the history and his eye for detail is impressive. He balances perfectly on the tightrope between fact and fiction.
