i am all of the above (recovering addict for soon-to-be 8 years, working with addicts, daughter of an alcoholic). this book along with bruce alexander's book "the globalization of addiction" and "addiction is an attachment disorder" gave me more answers than NA, therapists, NA-meetings, NA-sponsors have given me combined. if it was up to me all addicts would have to read these three books to better understand themselves, and all social workers to better understand them.

unfortunately the book suffers from being slightly badly organized, which is no wonder considering dr. matè has ADD himself. i much prefer the stuff about early childhood development and its effect on neurotransmitters and how that relates to addiction.

This book truely offers the best insight into addiction that I have come across. It draws upon Mate's work in Vancouver where he is a doctor in a harm reduction programme in one of the most deprived areas of the city. The book examines, in a highly personal and extremely readable way, the reasons behind addiction and the truths and falacies about addicts and how to work with them. In essence it highlights the humanity of those suffering from drug addiction and presents a compelling case for the problem being medical and social rather than something which can be solved by aggressively targeting those suffering themselves. Perhaps for me personally the greatest triumph is the ability of the author to present the complex neuro science in a way which I could understand and subsequently apply in my own way. The book includes the stories of individual addicts as well as his own personal addiction to his work and to buying classical music - something which sounds humerous but has led him to spend huge sums of money and lie to his wife about. I would recommend this book to anyone with a vague interest in the workings of the human mind as well as those who would like to learn more about drug addiction itself. It is very well written and, for a book that is very 'sciencey' in a lot of ways, was surprisingly difficult to put down. I have also found it to be a profound influence on my own work (in a related field) in both the scientific basis for understanding addiction as well as the way in which Mate is able to be compassionate and understanding without being a condescending middle class doctor. An excellent book.

It is an honour to be invited by Dr Mate into a world of addiction. It's a comfortable yet revealing journey into ourselves,a view that enables us to laugh,to cry,to have hope and a vision of a much brighter world than you would expect from an insight into addiction and substance abuse.
Thank you Gabor(when you finish reading this you will consider Dr Mate a close friend)for tearing away prejudice and revealing compassion

This is the most comprehensive book about addiction I have read, I am an addict and found in this book information that allowed me to find compassion for myself and anyone suffering the effects of addiction of any kind. Gabor Maté is clearly a deeply compassionate man, who's own soul searching has led him to truly understand the condition about which he writes.

This book is the most thorough, compassionate and humane book I have read by a professional in the addiction field. A must for all those working or living with addiction as it allows the reader into the lives of those suffering from substance misuse issues. Explaining and exploring the reasons, physical and psychological, of how a person gets into and finds it so hard to get out of addiction. A book that could very well help change the perception of attitudes towards addicts and bring about a new way of tackling addiction issues in society.

It's unfortunate that Mate seems to be unaware about the extent to which psychotropics are harmful (Robert Whitaker's writings are very useful in this respect). But other than that, this is an excellent book

An amazing book to read. The main meat is in the back few chapters that really address the issues and interventions required when working with drug users or any human being, showing compassion and empathy.

Written with such incredible compassion, I can never fully express how inspired I was reading this book that educates rather than adds to rhetoric so often found in the recovery genre. Thank you!!!
