5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and inspiring! 9 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
This book is worth every penny if you're designing your garden. It gives good advice and inspiration. Best of all are the plant and shrub lists: plants that have an extra in more than one season. One of the main advice in this book: if you have a small garden, choose shrubs that stay relatively small/medium and are special. This book guides you through deciding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great practical book 13 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
I've been trying out a few different "small garden books" but felt this was one of the best because:

a) the gardens in it really are reasonably small (mine is only about 20ftx20ft with a side return, and many in the book are no bigger than that, or even smaller) - whereas I have seen other books suggest 30x40ft as a "small garden", resulting in many ideas that are hard to imagine in a properly small context.

b) it actually tells you something about the plants (many books have lovely pictures but don't tell you what the plants in them are - this one at least tells you the main plants, and has lists of suggested plants for different settings).

c) it has a selection of garden plans in the back: even if you are not designing from scratch, this gives some ideas on how to plan, what sort of planting can fit into what size of space, etc.

A pretty book that is also very helpful!
