This is the next stage in the evolution of Reallusion's popular CrazyTalk 'talking heads' software, expanding CrazyTalk's features into a full animation suite. Characters can now be full-body, either semi-side view or front-facing. The range of 2D toon stock content is excellent, although some of the pseudo-3D photo characters are a little bizarre. The Comic characters range is especially excellent, and various add-ons can be found for these online. It's when you see these 2D props and characters arranged in CTA's '3D stage view' that you start to realise the power of CTA. It makes it very easy to move your characters back and forth in space (the pros at Disney would talk of it in terms of 'z-depth' and 'parallax scrolling'). CTA generally does a lot of the heavy-lifting and tedious grunt-work of animation for you, with drag-and-drop character motions and a range of built-in content that's very easy to access and deploy. Considering CTA is still only in version 1.1, it's already an excellent choice for budding animators, and it should be trialled alongside the demo versions of Anime Studio and Toon Boom. CTA's ease-of-use is partly due to it drawing heavily on its 3D sister-product iClone 4, which gives CTA its polished interface and some advanced features. The documentation and video tutorials are outstanding. Generally I'd say CTA is suitable for anyone over the age of 10 with the intelligence and patience to make storytelling or singing animations. So what is CTA lacking at present? Well, it doesn't yet have Anime Studio's built-in physics. It has no anime (Japanese animation) range of faces or clothes yet, even as an add-on pack. But it happily accepts standard Flash (swf) files, so you can always draw your own content with a vector package such as DrawPlus or Coreldraw, or import it from the many online vector stock libraries. There is no "back view" of the characters, so a "walking into the sunset" scene might be tricky to do with CTA. Photo-fitting to make a new character from your photos is nowhere near as easy as the video tutorials make it seem, at least in terms of getting it all looking right and working properly. Note also that there are a couple of things that are limited only to the Pro version: fitting your own photos to the templates (i.e.: creating brand new characters from your own photos); auto lip-sync; and the more advanced features of the Timeline editing window. But if you can live without physics and some of CTA's Pro features, then CTA is a wonderfully polished and fun starter package for anyone interested in making great-looking 2D vector animations. It could also be used to make stills for comics panels, if you don't have the patience for animation. All of CTA's stock and store content is royalty-free, so you can make commercial animations and comics without any problems.

Badly supported 9 Jan 2012
By Nedrump
Although the manufacturer gives system requirements, they fail to tell you the requirements for the graphic card. The program would not therefore run on my machine which in other respects matched the spec

The response to my support query was slow and dismissive.

I upgraded my card as I wanted this program but to no no avail. It still does not run and neither does Crazy Talk 6 which I also bought. The documentation with this is pathetic
