Book Description

Set behind the scenes of America's most popular guilty pleasure—reality TV―Reality Jane delivers a high-spirited, delicious tale of finding love and a career in Hollywood while juggling lipo envy, singlehood angst, and the resounding results of success.
Reality Jane follows Jane Kaufman, a Canadian journalist who, because of a lucky connection, finds herself in LA as a producer on a hot new reality show. Mingling with rock stars, attending Grammy parties, and visiting the Sex Kitten Mansion, Jane sees her new career as a one-way ticket to the big-time! But for a small-town girl thrust into the cutthroat Hollywood scene, 90- hour work weeks, heartless bosses, and superficial womanizers are a rude awakening.
Just when her love life seems at its bleakest, along come not one but two guys vying for her heart: hunky Alex, a hot up-and-coming reality show host, and Grant, a sweet, sincere cameraman who’s unfazed by Hollywood fame. With a sizzling sex life on the horizon, and maybe even true love, Jane’s fondest hopes seem en-route to full realization when she lands the cherry gig of all time: a producer’s post on TV’s hottest new self-help talk show.
But the deeper Jane ventures into reality TV, the more completely un-real her life―personal and professional―becomes. And the realities of life behind-the-scenes—like goading people to confess their deepest, darkest secrets on cue—are chipping away at her very soul.
Lead character (and narrator) Jane embodies the perfect blend of smart-ass sarcasm, weary cynicism, and hopeful romanticism to appeal to today's readers. She also possesses a biting, acerbic wit that casts devilish, laugh-out-loud observations on the Hollywood scene, which are sure to please celeb watchers and reality show junkies alike.
A hugely entertaining glimpse at the world of reality TV from one of its own, who’s lived and breathed the business practically since its inception, Reality Jane is the chick-lit novel that reality TV junkies and chick-lit enthusiasts have long been waiting for.

If reality television hadn’t been invented, Shannon Nering wouldn’t know what to do for a living! Shannon’s a much-in-demand docu-reality producer and director, whose savant-like understanding of the genre, combined with her ability to create intimate bonds with her subjects, pays off in riveting television . . . and now riveting novels.
Recent producer and director credits include Peak Season for MTV (Supervising) and the CBC ratings winner The Week the Women Went. She cut her reality chops in Los Angeles, producing on numerous shows, from Bachelorettes in Alaska, to Blow Out, to The Dr. Phil Show. She began her broadcast career as an on-air host and reporter for the CBC.
Shannon currently lives in Vancouver, BC with her husband and two young sons.

3.0 out of 5 stars Reality TV chick lit 17 Nov. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Reality Jane took me on a rollercoaster ride of success and what it meant to sacrifice in order to achieve it.

Jane, a journalist from Canada, finds herself thrust into the fast paced Hollywood lifestyle all thanks to a lucky connection. Jane is the new producer on a reality show. Her life suddenly becomes a blur of Grammy parties, Sex Kittens, rock stars and backstabbing. It doesn't take long for her to realise the glitter of Tinsel Town doesn't always cover the greed and darker side.

Just when her life and career seem at its bleakest, Jane is offered a new opportunity on a hot new show. The new show brings not one, but two hotties into Jane's life - upcoming TV host, Alex, and down-to-earth and gorgeous camera-man, Grant.

But Jane must make some choices and decide what is more important to her - integrity or success, love or career, honesty or lies.

Reality Jane had the perfect mix of my two favourite things - reality TV and chicklit. This is an awesome read for anyone who loves either of these, and the awful decision of choosing between two men...

5.0 out of 5 stars Super. Fun. Read. 12 Oct. 2012

I've had so much fun reading this book that I am now reading it again. Nering does an awesome job at getting Jane into the most awkward and humiliating places, and there is this great satisfaction when Jane triumphs over them. I've found myself relating to Jane throughout the whole story - she is a wonderfully flawed character. I recommend this to anyone who wants a fun fast read!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Chick-Lit read! 22 May 2012
By michele capobianco - Published on
Small town, Canadian journalist Jane Kaufman is finally in Hollywood, living the dream life of a television producer; 18 hour work days, endless coffee beverages, and heartless employers. This was not what Jane was expecting when she signed up to work for Ricky Dean, the hottest self-help reality icon in radio and, now, TV.

Learning the lessons of betrayal and loyalty in the biz, Jane realizes that maybe Hollywood isnft all itfs cracked up to be. Jane tells us of her adventures behind the camera with famous sex kittens and rap stars, all the while managing her confusing dating life as a single gal in her late 20s. Does she go for the sexy Alex who help set her up with the gig of her life? Or does she stay with Grant, the loyal and caring boyfriend? While juggling her dating life, she juggles her friendships too which often appear as unaffected as a botoxed forehead, and as superficial too.

But Jane has a good heart, and although she may not want to admit it at first, she finally realizes that she is too good to work for a man who claims to help but only hurts. It takes a seven-year-old girlfs tears to bring Jane back to reality, but when she is back, she is better than ever.

For Carrie Bradshaw fans (Sex And The City) or Chelsea Handler fans, this is a great read. Itfs a lot of fun and author Shannon Nering gives a great inside look at what it is like to be a TV producer, her being one in actual reality. Reading her quick narration is like sitting at a swanky Los Angeles Club, chatting over martinis. Reality Jane is romantic, witty, spunky, and entertaining. Maybe even made for TV!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun romp through a Producer's life 2 Nov. 2011
By Miss Book Lover - Published on
Ever wonder what it's like behind the scenes of reality tv? Well, you're about to get a front row seat in the producers booth. jane leaves Canada behind when she's hired to be a producer for a reality show filmed in LA. She gets to see the real life behavior of the host- who may just have something to do with why Jane needed to start immediately. Jane makes "friends" in the work place. Jane even discovers what dating is like when you work in the entertainment industry.

I loved every minute of this book. The story is true, but told in a light and fun way. I felt right there with jane as she navigates LA and all that comes with it. From the friends who aren't all they originally seem, to the boyfriends who have their own agendas. I had a great time reading the pitfalls that came when Jane landed her "dream job" on "Fix Your Life". Thinking she was going to be helping people, my heart broke with hers when she found out what really happened. I was right there cheering Jane on as she stood up for herself amongst a world of Yes people.

5.0 out of 5 stars The truth about REALITY TV 12 Dec. 2011
By Thomas Moody - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is one extremely engaging book revealing the 'back stories' of reality television. Author Nering has created an engaging story of the often unbelievable goings-on behind the cameras in today's flock of reality shows that seem to dominate the air waves. Her fictional account is very readable and in fact rather compelling. An excellent read for anyone who has ever tuned in (and that's most of us), or worked in the industry (and yes we have). Strong and believable characters, compelling a story line, and great pacing make this one excellent read indeed. Clearly based on factual matters in creating today's television fare, we can't help but wonder how someone with the highest goals for a career in television could survive the experiences Ms Neering has portrayed in "Reality Jane." The truth behind this fictional rendering is simply stunning. Well written and highly recommended. You'll never look at reality TV the same way again!

5.0 out of 5 stars fun quick read... 26 Oct. 2011
By Tillie Nutter - Published on
Reality Jane was such a fun, quick read. A voyeuristic book combined with reality TV made me not want to set this book down. Not since The Assistant's have I thoroughly enjoyed a behind-the-scenes type of book so much.

Jane wants nothing more than to make it big in LA. I loved her naivety and her charm when she first arrived. I felt what she felt throughout the whole book. I loved watching her journey from innocent assistant producer to the career junkie who got her "perfect job".

If the excitement of her job wasn't enough, her personal life is a mess too. I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what she would do next. Would she continue picking the wrong guy? Or finally get her happily ever after.

This book turned into one of my favorite chick-lit books of all time.
