69 Love Songs is a very hard act to follow and it is almost inevitable that the Magnetic Fields' work will always be compared to it. However, Realism is a very good album indeed and would almost certainly be much better received it people didn't immediately make the comparisonc with past work.

Unlike the previous reviewer I don't appreciate "whistful,whimsical, bright and breezy"!
I want "edge".
I own a lot of Magnetic Fields albums and they're all superior to this one!
The first track sounds like a 69 Love Songs out-take and is excellent.
The rest is a bit dull!

Whilst a healthy portion of the music on offer here makes me yawn with indifference and yearn for creative thrust Stephin Merritt to plug in as with previous efforts, thankfully enough quality exists elsewhere to redeem Realism. For instance, rib-tickling lyrics such as "seduced and abandoned and what can I do, I think I might drink a few" recall Neil Hannon at his most childishly subversive, and Merritt's voice remains the measure of dry indifference. Sufficient for now.

Not an album that demands repeat listens
It just doesn't work. It has too much filler and only two authentically good songs ("You Must Be Out of Your Mind" and "We Are Having a Hootenanny"). Very unimpressive. Read more

A Step Back
I have every merrit album & this is the most disappointing in my opinion. I found the lyrics not as witty as his previous works & the music not catchy, interesting or even quirky. Read more
