3.0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag 5 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Although there are some excellent chapters, unless you are at the technical end of SharePoint, the overall content may be disappointing. To be fair, this is part of a "Programmer to Programmer" series, but it would have been great to have seen more about real-world usage of SharePoint in the sense of "how are people using it?"

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction 8 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Just a quick review; this book is a great introduction to SP2010, but only 4 stars because it doesn't exactly follow best practise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real World SharePoint 2010 is packed full of good info! 19 Nov 2010
By Bert Blevins - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
As an early adopter and preview reader of technical books (mainly surrounded around SharePoint technologies and its dependencies/complimentary components), I found Real World SharePoint series continues on its path of excellence. This book is very well written and contains 20 chapters of varying aspects within SharePoint 2010 lifecycle. This book is most valuable to the person who touches all aspects of SharePoint 2010 management (from administration to oversight of the development experience). If you are currently running SharePoint 2007 and need to get an immediate boost of information then this book is for you. If you are heavy on one side of the SharePoint 2010 experience (development or admin) then this book will help acquaint you to the other side. Additionally, I found three chapters within this book which collectively do not exist anywhere (yet) - so to me that was a bonus!

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally worth a read. 3 Jan 2011
By SharePointLife - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I loved a couple of chapters in this book.

1. Chapter 11: ***** Writing Service Applications - Andrew Connell. This is what I was looking for. He has explained how to build a service application and how it all works. Good stuff.*****
2. Chapter 4: Claims under the hood - Adam Beunz. Gives a good level of detail for claims based authentication and how SharePoint uses it. Learnt something new here.
3. Chapter 16: Metadata management - Joris Poelmans. A good reference to the concepts of metadata management including how to use the OM to modify your taxonomy.

All the other chapters are good as well, but I found the above chapters usefull and were a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Consider this as your guide for the project 22 Jun 2011
By Joy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have used Real World SharePoint 2007 when I was struggling a lot with my projects as the guideline. That was the time we didn't have much technical content about the product. Now we have lot of content about the product freely available but finding the right information has been always a challenge for me.
I have lots of books in .NET & SharePoint technologies but most of them are huge literatures and takes lot of time for you to grasp the concepts. They have lots and lots of text.
Real World SharePoint 2010 has less text, more pictures and lot of step-by-step sections for us to get ourselves ramp up very easily and fast. I have been honored to get a copy of this book just after the book was released and following are some of the great chapters I found in the book:
* Chapter 1 - Building a Perfect Test Environment for SharePoint Server 2010 by Shane Young
* Chapter 6 - Backing Up and Restoring SharePoint 2010 by Randy Williams
* Chapter 13 - Using Silverlight 4 with SharePoint 2010 by Karine Bosch
* Chapter 19 - Planning, Designing and Administering a Multimedia Assets Management Solution by Claudio Brotto and Igor Macori
