As mentioned in my reviews of other books associated with digital photography, my own personal conversion from film to digital photography has been a very steep leaning curve and not all the products I have purchased were useful. Furthermore, I have been very disappointed with some of the books I have purchased.

To be clear, this is one of the good books but I do consider the price charged to be far too expensive for what it is. I say this because I am well aware of what goes into the making of an expensive book and this product should have been marketed at two thirds of the publishers RRP. Seriously! Put another way, either the author or his publisher (or both) are guilty of demanding a high price for this author's knowledge. Personally, I find that arrogant and sad.

Other than that, if you want to know all about Capture NX, this is probably one of the best books on the subject. Please note, I have not deducted stars because of the aforementioned - but on this occasion, I do find the RRP most upsetting!

A disappointing book, poorly written and highly repetitive. Certain things are explained several times within the same chapter (for example that Capture NX2 is a non-destructive editing program). In addition, many important issues are not properly described. For example, there are 4 different ways to do a black & white conversion. Only two are described in the book very briefly - and these are certainly not the ones I would recommend using.

What is more, the print quality of this book is inadequate. It is often difficult to see what is the difference between the original and the edited image. Also, most example pictures used in this book appear quite unprofessional in terms of composition, exposure, or both. While this may be instructive for illustrating some editing techniques, it is certainly not inspiring.

Generally, I found the original Nikon manual much more helpful - and it comes free of charge.

Having read some of the other titles in the "Real World" series I had high hopes for this one.
Ultimately I'm disappointed because it doesn't add anything that's not in the (actually pretty good) Capture NX manual and gives the impression of being produced by a professional author who's been paid to write a Capture NX book rather than someone who actually uses the program. The photos used in the book are also very amateurish and contribute to this feel.
Don't bother with this one - buy "Capture NX 2 - After The Shoot" instead , which really is so much better.

It's a very good book in order to understand the use of Capture NX2. In my opinion is not the best book for Capture NX2 but the quality is very good

Well written and easy to understand. It shows the tools available in NX2 and there effects in addition to images before and after. The book includes colour images. This book is superb in it's content and print quality, go on purchase it if you are a Nikon user !

I really struggle with post-processing. I don't enjoy it, and much prefer to spend the time and effort getting it right in the camera, in my case a D90 with assorted lenses.

However, there's no getting away from the fact that this isn't always possible, or at least not possible for me, but I've never got along with Photoshop, and many of the guides to NX2 are far more advanced than I can readily cope with.

That's why I'm hopeful about this book. It's not too complicated, well illustrated, and suitably progressive, moving from first basics onward, and always bearing in mind the need for people to have a workflow that suits their abilities and aspirations.

Bought from Amazon, this isn't a major investment, and I strongly recommend that if you have NX2 you also have a look at this.

I've been struggling to get the most out of what, in my view, is an excellent photo editing application. The user manual doesn't provide advice on when to use certain features.

I've certainly learnt a lot from this book and would recommend it to anyone who uses Capture NX2 on a regular basis. The style of writing and the layout helps to make sense of NX2 and will enable you to get much more out of your software.
