Product Description

Product Description

Call it a control thing, but until recently--or, more specifically, until the availability of digital raw camera formats--you simply weren't ready to make the move to digital photography. Raw formats, however, changed all of that by allowing you to retrieve images before any in-camera processing has been performed. Photoshop's Adobe Camera Raw plug-in makes that process even easier by providing a standardized way of accessing and working with these uncompressed digital negatives in your favorite image-manipulation software. In the first volume devoted exclusively to the topic, best-selling author Bruce Fraser shows you how to take advantage of Adobe Camera Raw to set white balance, optimize contrast and saturation, handle noise, correct tint, and recover lost detail in images before converting them to another format. After learning about the raw formats themselves, you'll discover hands-on techniques for exposing and shooting for digital raw, using the File Browser to preview images and automate tasks, and building a workflow around the digital raw process.

5.0 out of 5 stars All you ever need to know about RAW, 28 Nov 2004

This review is from: Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop (Paperback)
This book is a must for people who want to get the best out of using RAW and editing before bringing them into PhotoShop CS. The book takes you through the Camera Raw application and explains what to do and what not to do. It opened my eyes to clipped hightlights and shadows and that the histogram on the back of most digital cameras is a JPEG compressed histogram. It covers automation and workflow issues as well as how to process images efficiently and in the right order.

As a novice to the world of digital photography this book really is a valuable reference when it comes to learning and understanding the RAW image format. It starts with the basics and takes you to new levels of knowledge which has helped to improve my photographic skills.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, but ..., 3 Sep 2005
This review is from: Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop (Paperback)
The best book or article on Digital Camera Raw capture and Adobe Camera Raw that I've read, written by The Expert(s). The first half of the book is a very clear and understandable coverage from what RAW capture is, high bit processing and through to using the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in.

The second half of the book is the "Industrial Strength Production Techniques" sub title, covering the integration of the ACR plug-in with Photoshop's File Browser and Actions to automate the mass conversion of digital camera RAW files, and how to write your own metadata templates (!).

In other words, it's aimed at the professional or very experienced Photoshop user. So although it is far better than many books aimed at the amateur home user, it is not a recipe book for "how to get the best image quality" out of your RAW shots.
