I have been using Adobe software for quite some time and have had to invent laborious workarounds to problems I didn't know how to resolve. However, by dipping in and out of this weighty tome, I have unearthed a whole world of tricks and shortcuts that help me resolve all of the frustrating issues encountered on a regular basis with the software. Everything becomes so simple when you dive into the book - explanations are so clear and practical.

Possible drawback for some is that it isn't in colour - not a problem for me as I prefer practical to pretty. Also, there are cheaper books out there, but these simply do not provide the coverage, depth and answers to the issues I might need help with.

I have used many other books such as Adobe InDesign CS5 Classroom in a Book (Classroom in a Book (Adobe)) series and also the 'Brilliant InDesign CS5 series'. These books are OK, but they mostly tell me what I already know. Real World Adobe Indesign is superb and I am considering buying the other Adobe titles in the same series.

My definitive reference for all things InDesign 27 Oct 2010
By Rufus Deuchler - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
As a graphic designer, I did not always have time to learn the ins and outs of InDesign. Too much time spent producing, too little spent learning; I am sure that many designers out there are familiar with that. In front of me are Blatner's and Kvern's volumes for InDesign CS2, CS3, CS4, and now CS5. What is so great about Real World InDesign CS5 is that it serves as a quick reference for whenever you are blocked with any specific feature.
Also, a great deal of learning the application comes from just browsing the book, randomly turning pages, and being surprised by old and new features, or tips and tricks.
The addition of Bob Bringhurst (lead writer for InDesign and InCopy at Adobe) to the team of authors, brings a fresh new voice. David mentions in the introduction that if it weren't for Bob, the book may not have been written. I hope that there will be many more with that new line-up of authors.
Notice how I never once mentioned that you should read the book cover to cover (more than 800 pages). My secret for using this book? Well, it's the 60 page index in the end. It has never failed to direct me to the information I needed to solve a problem, or to learn about a feature.

THE reference guide for ID CS5 6 Dec 2010
By Mr. Gone - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am a yearbook adviser at a public high school and we create a 500+ page book (plus a number of other publications) each year. While I have at my disposal any number of online programs from my publisher, I prefer to run the course using InDesign without employing online or publisher plug-in "cheats." My goal is to have my students proficient in InDesign should they decide to pursue a career in publishing or graphic design.

This book is THE go-to reference on our shelf. In our classroom, the editors refer to it as the bible (as in, "Mr. Gone, can I see the bible, or can you lookup how to pull a 4X6 photo grid for me?"). My usual instructions to my students at the beginning of the year are "if you can imagine it, we can build it." This book makes that possible. InDesign is such a powerful tool and someone like a simple high school yearbook adviser cannot even begin to scratch the surface of its uses. However, for tapping into the utmost in creativity and (more importantly?) efficiency, this book is THE reference.

A note to would-be buyers: This is not a tutorial or lesson driven text, it is a reference book that explains every tool and feature available in InDesign. My guess, though is that if you were studying for the InDesign ACE exam, this would be your text book...

Still the best book around 2 Nov 2010
By S. Citron - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is now my second attempt to review this book. I wrote a previous review last week. It was up for a nano-second and then disappeared. Who knows why? Anyway, this book is The Bible of InDesign and also happens to be a fun read (which says a lot for a 900 page computer book). The authors are wonderful writers and there's much to learn. So don't delay. Dive in. You won't be disappointed.
