The release of a covers album can often be a sign that an artist is in either a creative or sales slump.Just occaisionally, however, this type of album can throw up a renewed spirit of fun for all involved, and thankfully Tesla's Real To Reel veers strongly to the latter.
There is no doubting the love Tesla have for the music they are playing, and respect is afforded to all of the songs they cover.Sensibly, the band have stuck[more or less] to their rock roots[declaring, somewhat hopefully, in the sleevenotes to be a band successful in the wrong decade],and they cheerfully run through songs by Deep Purple,U.F.O,[and it has to be said,a blistering version of "Rock Bottom"],Robin Trower,The James Gang, and Thin Lizzy with an almost reverential approach[its almost as if the band are secretly afraid of upsetting their heroes].In effect this means the songs stick very closely to their original versions, which to my mind is fine. The downside of this means that once the originals have been checked out,Real To Reel, could become redundant.
Still, this is a genuinely sincere attempt to pay homage to many great bands, and although this has now been done many times before, there are no real disasters on show to spoil this party!
