Product Description

For thousands of years, humanity has attempted to enforce ethics through supernatural and secular punishments; this rabid aggression has been both necessary and ridiculous. It has been necessary because a rational proof of secular ethics has never been achieved; it has been ridiculous because it is impossible to imagine any scientific or mathematical argument being advanced in such a hysterical and violent manner.

“Ethics” has been one of the great government programs of history; since kings and priests ruled mankind, only those philosophers who served their interests tended to get promoted to prominence, rather than imprisoned, poisoned or burned. Thus, over 2,500 years since its inception, the discipline of ethics remains largely subjectivist, relativist and cultural – and was not only unable to restrain, but may have played a part in promoting the horrors, wars and genocides of the 20th century, the bloodiest hundred years of history of our species.

Stefan Molyneux, host of Freedomain Radio, has written "Universally Preferable Behavior: A Rational Proof of Secular Ethics,” which presents radical and rational arguments for a nonreligious, non-statist, entirely secular set ethical standards which validate the nonaggression principle – thou shalt not initiate force against thy fellow human – and the fundamental logic for respecting property rights.

Rigorous, analytical and challenging, “Universally Preferable Behavior” provides a solid foundation for secular ethics. This book solves the ancient philosopher Petrarch’s dichotomy, which is that it is better to will the good than know the truth. Armed with the arguments in “Universally Preferable Behavior,” you can both know the truth and will the good.

5.0 out of 5 stars a refreshing perspective 25 Sept. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A very different approach to the so called "family values" that seem to be a virtue everyone is expected unquestionably abide by. That is all well and good if you have been born into a perfect family. The more difficult question comes when children are expected to treat corrupt or abusive parents better than they were/are treated as children. Stefan questions the moral absolutes and common things we hear such as "you are bad because you disobey" or do this "because I say so" that are often forced upon children.

This book takes a good look at the nature of voluntary and involuntary relationships and how we can improve the way we live with others. A great read for anyone looking for a different perspective on improving the way they live, view and interact with others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it - excellent read! 28 May 2011

One of my favorite books on relationships. It helped me immensely in understanding the chronic patterns that cropped up in my romantic relationships. You won't find any pop psychology here - this book is truthful, honest and direct about how our personal histories create the "romantic image" of an ideal mate and where and why it can go very wrong. I'm still challenged by many of the ideas contained in this book and I've revisited them several times to reflect on what I truly want out of a relationship. Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars RTR; your life will never be the same... 29 May 2011
By ALaird - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
RTR is a unique book, not only due to it's range but also it's ability to make us look on every relationship; romantic, familial and societal in a whole new light. By showing that all intimate relationship must be voluntary in order to be happy and harmonious, the dogma of "owing allegiance" and "unconditional love" are arduously examined.

An absolutely gripping and compelling book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking and Rational 6 Jan. 2014
By J. Lavallee - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
As with all of Stefan’s nonfiction work this is a truly wonderful read or audio book experience. Some things might be uncomfortable to hear depending on where you are in your personal journey toward truth but the logic is always stated and it is always a good idea to question everything. Having gone through all his books and many podcasts I have to say that he is one of the few people I can’t find too much to complain about when it comes to thought processing and he has highlighted a few points and developed some brilliant logical solutions I had not thought of.

About the only warning I would give is that people who are new to libertarian thought, the concept of the Non-Aggression Principal and general free thinking need to understand that a lot of these concepts are not primer material. Even though logic based on respect for others should not be shocking, the concepts fly in the face of traditional thought in that they don’t allow for exemptions to principal or logic and pointing out this hypocrisy can cause instinctive recoil.

You’ll often hear a free market person joke that the difference between a minarchist and an anarchist is six months because freeing your mind does take time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jump right into getting results today! 4 Nov. 2012
By Mr. C - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
In this book, you'll find out that a lot of self-help book readers don't look too hard into studies of effectiveness compared to placebo and rates of horrible relationship failures while using the advice of the author. This is put to good use, as the author repeats a lot of common advice that he exaggerates to extremes and to which he applies his own style of justification for.

You won't have to slog through a lot of statistics of what works here! Great for mathophobes and people who are intrigued by what are sure to be the defining arguments supporting various self help notions!

There's no need to suffer under the yoke of endlessly waiting until a theory has a good proportion of long-term success with an extremely low proportion of horrible failure. This book allows you to jump right in and start getting results right away!

5.0 out of 5 stars Touch the heart of you mental problems 5 July 2013
By Omar Javier Rodriguez - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
People use the word love with so much frequency but little people "know" what it means. In fact they know but they deform the concept because if you define it objectively inevitably you will find out that many people that claim to love you really don't, in the same way you don't really love many people. Despite the pain this book can provoke, you will end up looking for real love relationships.
