As I was born is England with Jamaican parents, my mum would cook amazing Jamaican dishes, but then a few years ago I moved away to go university and missed all these great meals. Then I bought The Real Taste of Jamaica on Amazon not knowing what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised.
This book has all the traditional Jamaican meals that my mum cooks and ones that she's never even heard of. The recipes include a wide range of meals and drinks. It's broken up into chapters on starters, meals, soups, cakes, desserts and drinks. Classic recipes that are in the book are rice and peas, ackee and salt fish, johnny cakes (dumplins), curry goat, jerk chicken, salt fish fritters, grater cake, spiced bun, banana cake, pina colada, rum punch and many more. Instead of really bad sketches there are beautiful large photographs of the finished product.
As I live in England, I was a bit worried about not understanding some of the ingredients, but there was only one I didn't understand which was escallion, which my mum quickly cleared up fo me as it was spring onion. The recipes themselves are easy and straighforward to do.
I would definitely recommend this book for everyone.
