Amazon.co.uk Review

Sometime in the not-too-distant future, boxing has been outlawed and replaced by fighting matches with robots. Big robots. Hulking, rock 'em, sock 'em mechanical robots. But if those machines are cutting edge, Real Steel sticks to an old-fashioned style of storytelling, with a tale of a down-and-out fight manager (Hugh Jackman) looking for a good 'bot to get back in the game, and get back out of debt. Hearts are further tugged by the arrival of this guy's 11-year-old son (Dakota Goyo), who hasn't seen his dad in many years but now needs tending. There's something endearing about the way nobody ever pauses to remark on the fact that they are in the presence of giant remote-controlled prizefighting robots; it's taken for granted in this cockeyed universe. Loosely inspired by a Richard Matheson-penned episode of The Twilight Zone, Shawn Levy's film is lavishly mounted and fairly ridiculous--although in this case, the human interactions are more preposterous and formulaic than the fun robot action. Jackman plays to his roguish strengths, Evangeline Lilly (Lost) gets the perfunctory love interest role, and the villains are uncomplicatedly hissable, from Jackman's good ol' boy rival (Kevin Durand) to the heavily accented owners (Olga Fonda, Karl Yune) of the most fearsome of robots, the undefeated Zeus. If you can imagine Rocky restaged with a pile of spare parts, you might be the audience for Real Steel. --Robert Horton

DVD Description

A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone hi-tech, Real Steel, stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goya) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

Special Features:
  • Countdown to the fight - The Charlie Kenton Story
  • Making of Metal Valley
  • Building the Bots
  • Sugar Ray Leonard: Cornermans Champ
  • Deleted and Extended Scenes with introductions by director Shawn Levy
  • Extended 'Meet Ambush'
  • Deleted Butterfly Storyline
  • Bloopers

great fun to watch! 10 April 2012
By ElaineG
Format:DVD
We sat and watched this with the kids last night and we all loved it. My 12 year old said it was awesome! I see someone else said it was like Rocky meets Transformers and yes, that probably sums it up well. The storyline can be a tad predictable, but its still very enjoyable. At the start of the film Hugh Jackman is a struggling robot boxing promoter - going through a very bad patch (everything he touches seems to go wrong) - who "agrees" to spend time with his 11 year old son who he hasnt seen since he was a baby. A typical Underdog movie, the heroes struggle throughout the movie but come out victorious in the end - the boxing scenes are good and you cannot help but smile at the dancing Atom, and find yourself shouting for him to win his boxing matches. All in all, great fun to watch and hopefully there will be a second film in the series, it was certainly left that way - my son and I agreed on one scenario which meant a follow on could be possible.

I LOVE this film. I've watched the film twice already and loved it both times. My favourite part was when one robots that Charlie and Max was competing against started punching itself in the head.It was really funny.I'm deffinetlly going to watch it again.

To be fair this does exactly what it says on the tin: entertaining family film with fighting robots, what's not to like? Only, too much cheese starts to make me slightly nauseous... I can handle the cliched plot and characters and dancing child/robot, it's all part of the charm and to be expected. What really made me cringe was a scene where the boy grabs the microphone and spouts off an arrogant speech, which made me realize he reminded me too much of the young Anakin Skywalker. If I ever watch this again I'll have to mute that bit or go make a cup of tea. So, most will enjoy this but if you're particularly adverse to the Spielberg brand of sentimental cheese then it might be best to avoid...
