Product Description

Product Description

It's a clever title and epitomises the band's aim to get real and realise their musical ideas on those reels of magnetic tape used in the recording studios of the pre-digital era. Real To Reel was recorded at the famed Air Studios in Montserrat in the West Indies, and the environment must have inspired the musicians to a greater climax of creativity. The eight tracks showcase the echoing moody sound of Colin Cooper's saxophone, on such tracks as Children Of The Night Time , but it's back to Peter Haycock's funky slide blues guitar on such stand out numbers as Long Distance Love . The pair make a highly productive team, sharing vocal and instrumental duties supported by Derek Holt (bass), Pieter Filleul (keyboards) and John Cuffley (drums). First released in 1979, Real To Reel makes a welcome addition to the range of Climax classics being carefully restored from the archives of rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Climax keep it real :-) 3 July 2012

Feel the Montserrat heat... Climax in 1979. Forget other trends in music that had come and gone, Climax were still doing what they did best on Real To Reel, great songs, all manner of styles but ultimately all with that Climax sound.
For me it's not as complete an album as Shine On, but it does contain two tracks that are better than anything on the previous years offering. Summer Rain is a track I could listen to all day long, as the album was recorded in the heat of Montserrat, maybe the band were craving a little light rain to cool them down, Summer Rain has a delightfully lazy, loose groove that would not be out of place on Little Feat albums from the same era but has that Climax sax and guitar stamp all over it, a great lyric superbly sung by Pete Haycock. Magnificent. Children Of The Nightime is possibly Colin Cooper at his with Summer Rain the groove and the feeling in the song creates a mood that takes you right there, in this case right into the heart of the city, cruising on a Saturday night. The level is low, Colin's vocals are right down on the floor and his sax is positively steaming. Magnificent again. Lovin' Wheel and Long Distance Love are fine uptempo work-outs, bucking the possible trend that this album could have been totally laid back. Fallen In Love does move into that territory but is a fine ballad well sung by Pete Haycock, and adds nicely to over all balance of the album. Fat City doesn't quite hit the 'raucous' button as well as Champagne And Rock & Roll did on Shine On and falls a bit short, Money In Your Pocket kicks along nicely at a pace and was even better live, more of the sax and guitar interplay and a fine shared vocal. Crazy World has a nice lilt to it to round off the album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love It 27 April 2013

Sounds Great and was delivered very quickly. It's about time that Climax Cds were reissued digitally. A very under rated band, especially for their older work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Music Finally Released And Nicely Remastered 9 May 2012

Just got in 4 out of the 5 never released CBB albums that were just done by Repertiore and the first one I put on was Real To Reel my favorite of the bunch and I must say Repertiore did a great job on this reissue...the sound quality is excellent ...crisp and clear highs...not the muffled made from vinyl sound...and the music always was GREAT!!!!!!!

If you liked this when it was only available on vinyl...what are you waiting for...get these reissues before they disappear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great to have a classic on CD 14 Jun 2013
By Dave Knowles - Published on

Had this as a vinyl record with a somewhat scratchy version of Summer Rain, one of the best tracks on the album. When CDs came along, tried to get it but was always told it was unavailable, never released on CD. The years went by and all hope had vanished until now. How brilliant to see this was at last available and some attention had been paid to an album of raw brilliance, offering a mix of upbeat rhythm, ballads and bluesy rock, with a high standard of musicianship throughout.
The sound on the CD is superb - crystal clear and affording the highest homage to a bunch of musicians at their best. Saxophone, drums, keyboards, harmonizing vocals - it's all there. As the title of the album indicates, these guys, Climax Blues Band, were for Real on this album and they delivered. It's a pity there are only eight songs and total playing time is under 40 minutes but that's enough time to be in heaven before staying above the clouds by hitting the repeat button. This music is more than 30 years old, yet it's still magic. That's the sign of a bunch of true musicians who brought their talent to the fore.
This is a CD to enjoy over and over. Give it an extended run in the car, in the sound system indoors. It's manna for the ears and a lasting legacy to one of rock/blues's unsung bands.
Introduce yourself to Climax Blues Band with this CD.
Thanks to Amazon for prompt posting and the CD is well presented, with a booklet and notes highlighting the album, its songs and the band. Five stars without hesitation.

A great late 70's album by CBB. It's one of those rare recordings in that all the songs are good. No fluff or fillers.
They don't make music like this any more. I would reckomend this to anyone. I don't know how the "crap" that's on the
radio today passes for music. Hey- I'm a child of the 70's and 80's.

I saw this band in concert in Lenox, MA in the 70's. This particular album is OK but not the one I remembered as being great. Still, a very good rock/blues album
