Real MCTS/MCITP Exam is designed to validate Windows Server 2003 Microsoft Certified Systems Administrators (MCSAs) AD and Application Platform Technical Specialists skills. The object of this exam is to validate only the skills that are are different from the existing MCSA skills. This exam will fulfill the Windows Server 2008 Technology Specialist requirements of Exams 70-640 and 70-643. The Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) on Windows Server 2008 credential is intended for information technology (IT) professionals who work in the complex computing environment of medium to large companies. The MCTS candidate should have at least one year of experience implementing and administering a network operating system in an environment that has the following characteristics: 250 to 5,000 or more users; three or more physical locations; and three or more domain controllers. MCTS candidates will manage network services and resources such as messaging, a database, file and print, a proxy server, a firewall, the Internet, an intranet, remote access, and client computer management. In addition MCTS candidates must understant connectivity requirements such as connecting branch offices and individual users in remote locations to the corporate network and connecting corporate networks to the Internet. Study Guide delivers, extra features missing

Grabbed this book in a pinch to see what I might need to know for 70-648 besides what I knew from hands-on implementation. I agree that it covers exam objectives, at least I passed with a decent margin. There were a couple "out of left field" questions on the exam that weren't in the book but that's not too bad considering this isn't from Microsoft Publishing.
Sometimes the book drags on covering knowledge that a MCSA 2003 cert holder should already know, but at the same time, the refresher can be helpful. My biggest disappointment is in Syngress' web team failing to deliver the online companion site in time for the book's publishing (and my scheduled exam, natch). As of this review, [...] yields 404. This URL is published on the cover and should have hosted the free practice exams and other supplemental material like MP3 audio covering the "Fast Tracks" (which are in the Study Guide too...handy items). I can't even find the book after poking around Syngress.com.
Still, I found this item helpful.

The REALLY bad 70-648 Prep Kit

First let's start with the title:
"The Real MCTS/MCITP Exam 70-648 Prep Kit"
... "The Independent source"
So I guess the Microsoft Press 70-768/70-649 book isn't "real?" And secondly, why would you want an "independent source" on this topic? Wouldn't you want say... a book by the people who write the exam - Microsoft?
Yes, yes you would.
I bought this book about a year ago before the Microsoft 70-648 book was out. And this is a key point - because I think this book was rushed to market in an attempt to capitalize on the lack of books on the market.
In short, this thing is full of errors, inconsistent pacing, doesn't seem to match exam objectives, and the labs will annoy you and make you mad that you just wasted your time.
I decided to start reading this about a week ago in preparation for taking the 70-648 exam. The first problem I noticed is the structure of the book doesn't seem to match the exam objectives.
Most importantly, the second problem I noticed is this doesn't look like anyone ever bothered to actually TRY the labs. I didn't even get past the first chapter because this book made me so furious with it's inconsistencies. Case in point, in Chapter 1 there is a lab that tells you to backup your system state to the C:\ drive and then restore it to your member server.
Oh, what member server you might ask? The one which you've apparently just been told to create. I mean sure, we could have done this in some kind of "Lab 1 Preparation checklist" but no, let's just drop critical requirements onto the reader in the middle of the chapter so they have to drop everything they're doing and go back and spin up a server.
Ok, so I'm using virtual machines - click, copy. Done, now I have a second server that's not a DC. Now I go to run "Windows Backup" hm I guess they mean "Windows Server Backup."
Wait, what's this? I can't backup to the same drive I installed the system partition onto? Oh, yes, of course. Now I need a D drive. I can resize my partition but oh right... the book didn't tell me I needed a C and D drive, and now the default size of the C drive is too small to make enough room to backup onto.
So I decided ok fine, I'll just skip that topic ... next one: installing a Server Core machine. I get to "Configuring a Server Core IP Addressing" and... the example command syntax given does _not work_
In short, I gave up on this after about 50 pages and went and ordered the Microsoft Official book for this topic. This book was clearly a rushjob to get to market before Microsoft's official text and it shows. I am extremely annoyed at having wasted money on this garbage and I will not being purchasing a Syngress book ever again.

Good book, but lacking extra information promised

This is a good book, but I bought it because of the Audio with it. Still waiting. I have called and emailed Syngress and have yet to get any response from them. The web url listed on the book does not work, and the site has no reference to this book. So much for the extra questions, and audio the book promises. I will definately not recommend Syngress after all the bad luck with this book and false advertisement!
