I'm new to slow-cooking. I've just gone back to work, and have to feed a 16 month old and a husband.

This book is a treasure!! We love the split pea soup, and the winter vegetable soup, and the lentil soup, and the chicken and turkey casseroles, and the pork and cider, and the beef goulash... it's been a lifesaver. Not only is it simple, with easy to find in the UK ingredients, but it has lengthy cooking times!

When I bought my slow cooker I bought several cookbooks, and this one by far is the best. Yes, it's got UK measurements, but the lengthy cooking times are great. If you're out of the house for 9.5 hours every day like I am, you won't want raw food (particularly poultry) sitting in the crockpot waiting for a timer to kick in the afternoon - you want it to cook all day. Some cookbooks don't have all-day instructions and this one DOES!

This book is a gem and well worth the price!

This is a neat little paperback with plenty of ideas for slow cooked meals. It lacks the visual inspiration that glossy cookbooks give, but the recipes are nicely categorised which makes for easy reading. The recipes themselves are clearly laid out, and quantities are given in both American and English measures. If the appeal of a slow cooker is the idea of returning home from work to a family meal all ready to be eaten, then this book will provide plenty of ideas. There is a good selection of everyday dishes, (real food, in fact), most of which require a minimal amount of preparation. There are traditional favourites of the kind that are easily associated with a slow cooker; navarin of lamb, or pork in cider perhaps, but the recipes are far from variations on a theme of stew. With ideas like risotto, stuffed marrow or baked onions, meal times should stay interesting. There are recipes for starters and puddings too, although personally I wouldn't find it helpful to arrive home to a ready cooked pudding and no main course. That said, the recipes do illustrate the surprising versatility of slow cooking, which can give you ideas for other recipes that can be adapted. The book also offers several pages of general advice on the principle of slow cooking, which are invaluable to the novice. Once the slow cooking bug really bites, I may splash out on a more expensive recipe book with glossy photographs and flashier recipes, but for a good supply of straightforward family meals that won't break the bank this book is ideal.

I purchased this at the same time as 'New Recipes For Your Slo-Cooker' by Annette Yates which, on recieving it, worried that it might just be an updated version of 'Real Food From Your Slo-Cooker.' Well, yes it is, but although a few of the recipes are repeated in the 'New Recipes' book, there are also a lot of recipes that have not been transferred over and therefore make the price tag worth the paying.

If you have just bought a slow cooker and are looking for a cheap book full of recipes to get you started, you won't get better than this one.
