Product Description

Product Description

Aberystwyth: two languages, a university, a farming community, a port turned marina, the National Library of Wales, home of writers and spies, was made recently famous, or infamous, by Malcolm Pryce's novels. It's any number of conflicting and complimentary things from its medieval beginnings through its Victorian heyday to the fluid mix of longstanding natives, large student population and colony of those who came and never left. Scouse Niall Griffiths may yet be one of the latter, and Aber and its environs have provided a rich source of material for his four novels. What does he make of the place outside of fiction? In the characteristic style of the "Real" series, this book mixes autobiography with topography, alligns the oblique approach with historical report, and contrasts the prosaic with the downright odd. Niall Griffiths has stepped outside his usual genre to produce an enthralling picture of a world famous town.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, well-informed romp through 'Aber', 22 Sep 2008
By AML "AML" (Bournemouth, UK) - See all my reviews
Part social study and part potted-history, this cheerful and cheeky little volume gives a good insight into the unique and complex character of this special town.

Clearly at home here, Griffiths shows an understanding of the people, history and spirit of Aberystwyth that must surely go far beyond that possessed by many born-and-bred locals. Nevertheless, most of those would probably find themselves nodding in agreement with Griffiths' insightful comments, or recognising some of the fellow townspeople referred to.

This is not a dry, authoritative account of Aberystwyth and its history. Rather, it is one man's interpretation of the area, based on a mixture of research and first-hand experience. The facts relayed and the extensive bibliography show that much study has gone into the book - but the writing style is light and easy to follow, with enjoyable rambling tangents and autobiographical elements. Griffiths drops in many comments about the people he met while writing the book - and the image of him picking up nuggets of information from meetings in cafes and pubs around the place both adds to the friendly tone of the work and is very much in the spirit of the town.

It's also good to see such attention given to the outskirts and hinterlands of the town - many writers would have failed to recognise their significance and their important relationship with the town itself.

The only real let-down with this work is the shoddy proofreading that detracts from the writing. There are some careless misspellings in the index and list of websites consulted, while it's and its are confused regularly throughout the book - which does spoil the flow slightly once you've spotted it! A couple of minor errors (mixing up the two secondary schools; a bit of a confused understanding of the town clock's history) perhaps undermine your faith in the book's accuracy a little - but then, it's such an enjoyable read you can almost forgive this.

Overall, good for the Aber local or the Aber newcomer alike. Read `Real Aberystwyth' and you'll have a good understanding of what makes this town tick!
