Product Description

Book Description

A guide to recruitment interviewing. Readymade Interview Questions deals with every phase of the recruitment process from defining the job vacancy and designing the application form, to the structuring of an interview. Interview questions are included, with typical replies and possible interpretations.

Product Description

Poor recruitment causes many problems, and can cost a company both cash and customers. In today's flexible workplace most managers will be faced with interviewing candidates - something at which few people are naturally adept. Many are given no formal training for this critical task, and as a result need to master the skills involved in selection interviewing. This fully revised, practical guide deals with every phase of the recruitment process, from defining the job vacancy to designing the application form and structuring the interview. It is the crucial issue of questioning, however, that lies at the heart of the interview process, and this book helps you to get it right. It provides advice on asking the right questions in the right way and in the best order, as well as tips on listening to and interpreting the answers. Nearly 200 proven interview questions are included, with typical responses and possible interpretations of them. Whilst it is an ideal book for the less experienced interviewer, "Readymade Interview Questions" should also be valuable for those who need to re-examine and improve their technique.

If it wasn't for the fact that I'd paid money for this book I'd find it very amusing. It is full of mind numbingly obvious facts to amuse, e.g. "It may be better to keep matters simple and make use of ordinary (usually well-designed) office chairs". The questions sometimes have some serious intention behind them but questions like "Are you comfortable in that chair? Can you see and hear everyone clearly?" example answer "No, the light casts a shadow on Mr Green's face. May I move the chair to the left?" are typical of what you get.

Also clearly aimed at the large 'corporate company' with no thought as to how smaller companies shortcut/streamline processes: i.e. not practical in any way.

I couldn't not recommend this book more strongly.

Good for novices 6 Nov 2006
I'm looking at the 3rd edition, revised my Margaret Dale. If participating in a recruitment process is completely new to you then this is actually quite helpful. The question:sample-answers may seem a bit vacuous, but what they illustrate or hint-at are the sort of things you as the interviewer might like to reflect on when asking questions, listening to responses, and reflecting on what they might mean. In other words, they illustrate the thought process that underpins an interview. As a very seasoned interviewer, this book acted like a check-list - how would I have interpreted the various answers had they been given? - and was a useful "pause for thought" here and there. So, in summary, not mind-blowing (but recruitment is, as recruitment does), yet not quite as grim as another review would have us believe.
