THE IDLE HANDS - Ready For Business
(Bone Idle: TIH07)
The Blues ... you only have to go to a Joe Bonamassa show to witness the kind of devotion it inspires. Of course the Americans lead the way as always, but what of something a little closer to home? Chesterfield based quartet The Idle Hands being one of its most promising exponents, with their reputation for high quality, emotionally charged Blues.
Their follow up to 2009's excellent `All Night Sinnin' opus, `Ready For Business' is their fifth full length album (sixth if you count 2001's live `Blues And Booze' offering); and like a fine wine, The Idle Hands just seem to get better with age. Sonically speaking this is the best sounding set they've yet produced, and this time around they've also really excelled themselves as songwriters!
Offering up a compelling interpretation of Chicago and Delta Blues, the band inject much of their own personality into the mix which gives the songs a deliciously British twist. As a lyricist Phil Allen's astute, often wry observations on life and the human condition make for a very natural and flowing narrative, his warmly emotive vocal style further enhanced by the inventive instrumental machinations of his colleagues. Bass player Jamie Burns and Drummer Paul Heydon have really bonded as the engine room of the band, their easy going yet deceptively complex rhythms driving things forward. Dave Robinson (surely one of the most underrated guitarists in the UK right now) has a succinctness and fluidity of style that is rare, bold riffs and sprawling solo's drawing favourable parallels with the likes of Jimmy Page and Rory Gallagher.
From the very first notes of the pulsating opener `Drive' (very Gary Moore like) the band set out to impress and bedazzle, and after a weighty sixteen inventive tracks, that's exactly what they do. Difficult to pick a favourite track as that really depends on the time of day or mood in which you find yourself; but off the top of my head the swaggering `I Get The Blame', atmospheric `When I First Met Chicago' or heartfelt `Lay My Burden Down' certainly crop up time and again.
That The Idle Hands are still unsigned is nothing short of staggering because on the strength of `Ready For Business' they have the chops to be able to trade punches with the best of `em.
