Book Description

27 Feb 2012 1844196372 978-1844196371

This book of practice test papers can be used by parents to prepare their child for school tests in three subject areas at Key Stage 1 – reading, writing and spelling, and mathematics. There are eight sets of practice papers in all, providing 10-12 hours of test practice, plus answers and notes for parents.

• These practice test papers give children the confidence of knowing the sort of questions they will experience in school tests towards the end of Key Stage 1.
• The papers also enable parents to assess their child’s progress at school, identify strengths and weaknesses, and help improve their child’s confidence and ability.
• The three subject areas are covered as follows:
– Reading: two papers, each including a level 2 and a level 3 test.
– Writing and spelling: three papers, each including two writing tasks (one longer and one shorter). These tasks cover different styles of writing and enable parents to assess their child’s handwriting skills. Each paper also includes a spelling test.
– Mathematics: three papers, the first of which is aimed at levels 1–2 and the remaining two at level 3.
• Parents can mark their child’s work using the pull-out answers and mark schemes provided. The marks can then be used to assess the child’s National Curriculum level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent learning material 20 May 2012

Well written, high quality product. It's certainly helped my child in getting to practice key skills. As I understand it, these test papers are very similar to the real ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful 9 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Great set of papers, clear explanation of how things are marked and therefore it gives a clear idea of the standard required. It is also very interesting to see examples written by children which had also been marked, eg stories and examples of handwriting standards! Very enlightening. I would recommend.

This book has test papers. I photo copied them and my child tryed them. I found his strenghs and weakness. But I think its helped him get used to tests and understand the types of questions he will be asked e.g tom had 28p . The marbles are 5p Each . How many can tom buy. I found my sons school hadnt taught him to deal with this kind of maths . Even the english reading and answering questions. The book tells u what you child can do to get more marks e.g by add then.and.so but in sentences. Types of handwriting. Its a good book big read and lots but u have to be one of those parents willing to do alot using the book with your child to see the benifits . Otherwise it will just get put on a shelf .

2.0 out of 5 stars Flawed in many respects 19 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book on the basis of previous 5 star reviews, but feel I should warn others thinking of buying the book themselves, about a number of flaws it contains. I am the parent of a child currently sitting KS1 SATS and of 2 others who have done so in previous years, and also a teacher and examiner as well, and so maybe spotted flaws that would not have been so obvious to those with less experience of the exams.

I particularly disliked:

1. The fact that the 'separate' papers are all in one book. Unlike other similar sample paper packs I have used previously, this does not consist of several separate papers in a cardboard folder, but one large book with lots of papers in it. This means it is quite a thick book - very hard to photocopy if you wish to repeat a test or re-use the material with another child, as it is not not spiral-bound either. It also makes the book quite intimidating-looking to a young child; a collection of separate, thin papers in the different subjects at different levels would have looked more like the real exam papers they have to do in class, and would have been more user-friendly.

2. The use of colour. All previous papers I've used made by other companies have just been in black and white, with maybe a thin band of a single colour round the edge at most. This uses incredibly bright full-colour illustrations UNDERNEATH THE TEXTS the children have to read for the reading comprehensions!! Clearly this book was designed by someone with no experience of teaching children or of how to create appropriate testing materials.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good variety of papers 4 Jun 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought these as I was worried how my son would cope with the Sats papers. I thought it would give him an idea of how the questions were worded. But as it happened I didn't end up using them. I thought they were very well laid out in colour and levelled 1, 2 and 3. I may use them in the future for my daughter when she in in year 2.

3.0 out of 5 stars Reading writing and maths practice SATS ks1
Book design a bit complicated as the chapters are designed by topic then level, so you have to really study it to ensure that your child does all the different tests. Read more
