Not about dyslexia 18 Aug 2009
By M. Wood
Format:Paperback
Coloured overlays do not cure dyslexia, MIS is not dyslexia, it is a different difficulty altogether. Many commentators have cast doubts on the use of coloured overlays for dyslexia and that's because....see above.

Professor Wilkins is one of the foremost experts on MIS and this book is an accessible explanation of this phenomenon and the various studies that have contributed to its understanding.

If you want a book by someone who understands MIS that is, dare I say it again, NOT DYSLEXIA, but MIS, then this is the defacto text on the subject.

P.S. The surname is just a coincidence with the reviewer above!

Very Informative 17 Aug 2009
By Eliza W
Format:Paperback
This book is very accessible but not dumbed down. The author is well known for his research into Meares-Irlen Syndrome (MIS)and is not trying to sell products or anecdotal unproven treatments. MIS is a perception disorder and is not the same as dyslexia, although often confused with visual deficit dyslexia. This book shows that so much can be done for people with reading difficulties - I have had a MIS test and used the Colorimeter machine (Arnold Wilkins invented but does not personally profit from) to get tinted lenses - they have transformed my life. All teachers should read this book as part of BEd degrees and PGCE courses.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful
Format:Paperback
Very clearly written, easy to read and covering most of the work done on this important approach to dyslexia. Particularly valuable for parents trying to understand the problems their child faces and looking for a way to help.

Once you've read this book you'll wonder why teachers bother with outdated phonic strategies.

You'll also want to know what more can be achieved through the use of colour to tackle dyslexia.
