About the Author

Adrienne Gear is a literacy mentor in the Vancouver School District who works with teachers and students on reading and writing initiatives and school-wide reading comprehension programmes. A classroom teacher for almost twenty years, she has taught at all primary levels and has experience in library and second language learning. Reading Power evolved from five years of experience in many classrooms in Adrienne's school and has led to workshop presentations throughout Canada.

This book is SUPERB for K-8 or over teachers who REALLY want to get their students to understand the reading comprehension strategies. I use many of her techniques already (post its, read aloud, modeling) but the songs and chants have helped my reading workshop connect to writing workshop in very powerful ways! I have been a primary teacher for 21 years and always love reading and learning new approaches to promoting student meta cognition in all areas of learning. Adrienne has helped make my teaching more meaningful this year. Thanks for listening. Hope this helps!

Reading Power: Teaching Students to Think While They Read was written by Adrienne Gear, a Literacy Mentor in the Vancouver School District. Gear developed this programme while working as an educator (teacher, ESL teacher, teacher-librarian, and District Literacy Mentor) in British Columbia. Rather than simply decoding the text on the page, Gear aims for teachers to explore thinking and metacognition with their students as an integral part of the reading process. Reading Power is the name of the programme that houses five major reading strategies: connect, question, visualise, infer, and synthesise. The intended audience of this book is educators of all occupations, but will be most helpful to classroom teachers in elementary schools. The only redundancy comes when Gear advocates for a “common language” that students can become familiarised with, though seeking acknowledgement of her new programme. Overall, this book was engaging, convincing of the usefulness of the Reading Power programme, and beneficial as an accompaniment to any Ministry literacy document. Reading Power is a welcome addition for any teacher; the principles explained through the Reading Power programme are helpful in any literacy program at any level of education.
