A short essay(120 pages) from the always readable poet, publisher,Michael Schmidt to support his sound theory that 'reading modern(ie open form) poetry entails an understanding of poetry of the past'.A useful, albeit slightly academic commentary on the 20th Century poetry scene, along the lines of his classic 'Lives of the Poets' justifies his argument, in fifteen short chapters.Whilst the thrust of his theory is undoubtedly correct,to appreciate the patterns and discipline etc that make ' good 'open verse (and the conventional ,for that matter) inevitably, still requires some understanding of the technical aspects of the poetic art.Reading past poets alone, will not help on this aspect.
