Format:Paperback
Although the title focuses on a university-based readership, this book can be relevant to a broader audience who has to engage actively with written material.

As can be seen from the table of contents available above, this book offers a list of various critical methods to support an active reading.

The key word here is the "stance" which each method provokes.

The book is a self-learning tool, probably better read before embarking on a project, or at least away from a project's "heat," on holidays, for instance.

Every method starts with an exercise on a set text with questions to practice first-hand a different "stance". Then, the author gives elements on the historiographical and theoretical background of the chosen method - with bibliographical references - if the reader wants to know more.

Every method is summarized in a concluding paragraph and the author offers a set of generic questions one might want to ask every type of reading material, alongside exercises (ie. short texts to be critically read with using the questions relevant to a particular method; the drawback is that the author does not provide his answer to these exercises so that the reader cannot test their findings).

Since there are lots of texts taken for examples, the book can be read in a sort of abridged version, only keeping the presentations of every method and their set of relevant questions.

Hard to read. 27 Aug 2008
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book attempts to instruct the reader in what it describes as an essential differentiating skill for degree level students. It may do this well. I am yet to find if it does due to some basic decisions of presentation.

The entire text is written with full justifiction with hyphenation at the end of lines, regardless of word involved. This makes it a very tough read. Any flow is stifled by having to re-read entire sections or, at best many sentences. Not really acceptable in a study skills series which includes a volume for students with dyslexia or other learning difficulties. Even for those who consider themselves good readers this is a depressingly tough book.

The whole book gives the impression of having no editorial or even proofreading input.

Not a good first choice for the subject matter. I shall be returning mine in favour of some other work.
