Book Description

30 Jan 2012
This innovative and unique book is a visual guide to the buildings that surround us, naming all the visible architectural features so that, unlike other architectural dictionaries, the reader doesn't have to know the name before looking it up. Clear line drawings and extensive colour photographs illustrate each of the main building types, from forts to churches, stately homes to skyscrapers. The individual structural elements and materials common to all buildings are then explained, whether in Classical, Gothic or Modernist style, before delving into the inner architectural details such as doors and windows, roofs and staircases. A comprehensive glossary completes the book. An original and accessible take on the architectural dictionary, this book takes you on a visual tour of the buildings around us, and will be useful not only to students but to anyone with a general interest in architecture.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't know your piloti from your pebble-dash? 27 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent book and it does do exactly what it says. Such a lexicon is long overdue. How many times has the student (or perhaps even the tutor!) been embarassed to admit that they really can't remember what that particular detail is called, which period it is from or which order it relates to. You could spend hours looking through your dusty copy of Bannister-Fletcher but why bother (and this venerable tome is short on references to pebble-dash anyway)this well-written, well-designed and presented book is all you will need to understand the fundamental visual language of architecture, from the classical to the contemporary. An excellent introduction for all those interested in what makes our built environment.Basics Interior Architecture 05: Texture + Materials

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome 8 Nov 2012
By James
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Great simple book just what I was looking for to learn the specific architectural lingo used for specific and historical design details in architecture.
Happened upon it in a well known book store which couldn't compete on the amazon price.
Arrived as described on time and has been put to good use.
