4.0 out of 5 stars Thw Whole World In My Hands 7 Oct 2011
By Puzzle crazy TOP 1000 REVIEWER
The introduction to this book states that "next to a dictionary, perhaps, an Atlas is the most useful and most frequently consulted reference book in a home library". It makes the point that an Atlas can be used by everyone in the home at some point, whether planning holidays, or looking up unfamiliar place names in the news, or just doing homework.

The Readers Digest Atlas of the World is a really big 260 page book which is actually too big to fit in our bookcase at home, so lives underneath it! It is hardback, and has lost its original outer cover and some of its interior pages through wear and tear! It contains, not only world maps, but an extensive section called " A world of Wonders", which starts off talking about the universe and how it began, before discussing the solar system and the place of Earth in space.

The book describes in detail the continental mosaic, and explains earthquakes and volcanoes. The different features of the environment all have their own sections in the book: Mountains, rivers and lakes, the ocean and the rocks. The book then covers the atmosphere, climate and weather, before touching on life on earth, and the appearance and subsequent civilisation, of mankind. This section covers the first 63 pages of the book, and this section is enhanced with detailed drawings and photographs. it is a really nice book just to sit and flick through, looking at the pictures and picking up snippets of information as you browse.

The second, larger section, which makes up the biggest part of the book, is the Atlas part itself, containing extensive maps of each continent, as well as two world maps, both political and physical, on a scale 1:75,000,000. The last section of the Altlas covers the Brisish Isles, at a scale of 1:1,000,000.
