Book Description

31 May 1997 Readers Digest
Describing 900 genera and over 8000 plants, this A-Z gardening encyclopaedia also introduces a way of identifying plants from their appearance alone. Hundreds of synonyms and common names are cross-referenced, and the book's coverage encompasses fruit, vegetables, herbs, house plants, flowers, foliage, shrubs and trees. The main benefits, uses and any drawbacks of each plant are pointed out, and there are instructions on cultivation, propagation and pruning techniques, and on dealing with pests and diseases.

I purchased my first home a year ago, and had little idea about plants for inside or outside the home. This book could not have been more helpful and I now have a better idea of how I will plant my garden next spring! I love the differnt sections, and now have a better idea of how to care for my plant purchases, as well as shade/sunlight placement. A great present for first time home buyers or gardening enthusiasts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Readers Digest Gardening Encyclopaedia 5 Sep 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the third time I have bought this book. I have had one for years and I have recently managed to buy two more as presents. It is, in my opinion, the best and most comprehensive book on gardening I have ever had and identifies everything with a colour plate. I was so pleased I managed to buy this latest one, so long after it was first published.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Companion 10 Oct 2009
The Reader's Digest New Encyclopedia Of Plant And Flowers is without a doubt the best companion to everybody's gardening needs and desires. It is comprehensive and authoritative both in style and content and yet it is also very easy to read and full of practical hints and sound advice. The entries are very clear, with thorough descriptions of the species and sub-species, shapes, flowering periods as well as practical seed propagation and care methods for each species, should you decide to grow your own seedlings or bulbs. The appendix is also very helpful, with plants and flowers grouped according to colours, type of soil preferred, flowering season, etc. There is also a practical section on how to best recognise flowers according their shapes, colour and seasonal flowering time. You really cannot go wrong!
Really highly recommended.
