Reader Rabbit Personalised Learning Year 1 introduces children to the very likable character of Reader Rabbit. Disaster is about to strike as all the props and scripts for Reader Rabbit's variety show have disappeared. He enlists the help of the children to ensure that the show goes on.
There are four areas to this program in which children are introduced to the characters of Professor Owl, Penelope Parrot, Papa Bear, Pierre, Betty and Babs the builder. En route to each area children encounter a challenge, for example, ordering the days of the week. The characters guide the children through a wide range of activities which include helping to rewrite the scripts by filling in the missing words using a given word-bank, identifying phonic blends, simple mathematical problems involving costumes and props. Children can create and buy their own costumes and pay for them with "billies". Children can also visit Pierre's studio and create posters for the show and copy musical tunes. Other activities also involve sorting, sequencing, estimating and measuring using non-standard units.
A second CD-ROM provides parents with a progress checker and there are also reward certificates that can be printed out. There is also a wide range of activities and two workbooks that can be printed out which would make an excellent resource for parents to use with their children.
Reader Rabbit Personalised Learning Year 1 is easy to use and all the activities are very clearly explained so that children would be able to work independently through the activities. This program supports work done as part of the National Curriculum and would be an excellent purchase for parents of Year 1 children. --Amanda York
