As a concept this book is fantastic. 200 pages of articles in Spanish on interesting subjects, written in normal spanish. The secret is that the obvious vocabulary words (i.e phrases and specialist words) are highlighted and sequentially written down the side of the page. Therefore you don't have to tediously keep looking through a dictionary.

Thus you can either try to translate everything, or just get the jist. I would recommend for an intermediate stage in learning.

this book is great value, if you have some spanish this book will realy help, but if you are just begining then this book will be of no use to you, the stories in the book are a great way to learn the language and will give you a head start with conversations on any way of life in Spain and south america.

Good idea 2 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
I think the concept behind this book is good. To have interesting articles written in Spanish with the less familiar words translated into English (together with the root of the verb) makes learning Spanish more interesting.

I'm trying to learn Spanish at the moment and have bought and listened to the first Michel Thomas CD course. Armed with just this knowledge I was able to understand a lot of the articles in this book, so it's probably fine for anyone just above beginner level.

The downside is that with no accompanying CD to give guidance on pronunciation, I don't think it isn't going to help me as much in verbal communications. However, I believe that there's a version with a CD so I would recommend that anyone who is interested should buy that one rather than this. (I'm kicking myself I didn't go for the book and CD, to be honest.)

THE culture?
Good concept, but there is no monolithic 'culture of the Spanish-speaking world'. Seeing as there are typos and mistakes, it seems that reading a newspaper would be more helpful.
