This is an interesting and well illustrated introduction to art history and appreciation. There is a section on the major themes of art, and a longer section which discusses style taking a chronological approach. In addition the book covers how paintings have been composed in terms of line, perspective, use of colour etc. There is a very small section on 20th century art, but anyone primarily interested in this period would need another book. A very useful general companion to a beginner in the history of art
