About the Author

Niger Calder is the author of Marine Diesel Engines (1987, 1991) and Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual (1989, 1995), the success of which has made him the most sought-after marine how-to writer in the U.S. and U.K. He has published more than 800 magazine articles in SAIL, Cruising World, Ocean Navigator, Yachting World, etc., and lectures on cruising to sell-out crowds. He is also the author of The Cruising Guide to The Northwest Caribbean (IM, 1991) and Cuba: A Cruising Guide (Imray, 1996). He will be testing his newest ideas with his family during a six-month cruise to the Caribbean and South America this winter.

For the serious or professional navigator this is probably an excellent book. For the amateur just beginning it's perhaps a bit "over the top". No doubt about it, Nigel Calder is a man of vast experience and I in no way wish to be critical of this publication. However, as a beginner I found it challenging to read with just too much detail. I opted instead to purchase "Understanding a Nautical Chart" by Paul Boissier which again from a beginners perspective is a much easier read.

If you are new to marine charts or interested in marine cartography then you’ll find this book of interest as it provides a good overview of the information contained in a marine chart and the background to it. If you are familiar with using marine charts then there is less of interest in the book.

A smashing book for those who skipper boats or for those who just want to know more about navigation and how boats get from A to B.

Excellent content and condition. Received item very quickly and well packaged. Required the book for my work with the National Coastwatch Institute at their Gwennap Head Watch Station.

It is a waste of time reading this on Kindle as the definition required in order to study the chart symbols is inadequate. My advice would be to buy the actual book.

This has a wealth of detail into both the reading of chart symbols, the history and the underlying theory behind charting. An excellent book.
