Product Description

"When I hear the word, 'culture', I reach for my gnu."

A funny – often hilarious – collection of poetry by Anna Chen from Aaaargh! Press.

If you want something stand-out different to the mainstream, a read that's witty with a sharp insightful twist, poems crammed with ideas that are transgressive and executed with nerve, verve and brio, then this book is for you.

The content ranges from political verse and generally funny stuff to explorations of love, relationships and sex — all from a stunningly original Orwell Prize shortlisted writer, performer and broadcaster.

What they said ...

“The poems in this collection are graceful, muscular, playful, rich in both emotional depth and intellectual rigour; brimful of righteous anger and piercing wit .... If you're reading this and you've never seen Anna Chen perform, you're in for a treat now and an even bigger one when you see her live.” CHARLES SHAAR MURRAY

“Brilliant and dangerous. In Reaching For My Gnu Anna Chen operates one wild-ride roller coaster that soars to altitudes of unfettered wit and then plunges with a startling and implacably knowing anger ... “What work of depravity is a man who amasses more than he can spend in a lifespan?” Her deck of cultural references includes Poe and Freud, Stalin and Hemingway, junk food, Marlon Brando, Moby Dick, and Anna May Wong, and she deals these cards face up with a unerringly sense of history uniquely coupled with a perception that’s as topical as tomorrow." MICK FARREN

"Anna Chen is fighting the good fight with fierce, funny, moving and sulphurous poems. You wouldn’t want to cross her, but you want to read her." HEATHCOTE WILLIAMS

" … heartfelt, funny, satirical, accessible and strong." LABOUR BRIEFING

"Superb." GREG PALAST

Praise for Anna Chen

"Cutting edge." STEWART LEE

"Charming, witty and sophisticated." SUNDAY TIMES

"Very witty" GRAHAM NORTON

Literally only just got the title pun, very funny. I found this book gutsy, funny and soulful. I liked it very much. The poems are slice of life, natural. They ooze a multi cultural London. i loved Burger, it actually made me laugh out loud. I may have to avoid McDonalds now for several days, I recommend the book highly and understand the author also has a very diverse and interesting blog so there is no need to stop at the book,. I love the idea that books can now, with the internet be far more interactive, you can tweets, chat to and express your ideas with your fav author. I recommend the book a hearty four stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, spiky, irreverent and FUN! 4 Oct 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Anna Chen is one of the rising stars of the vibrant British Poetry and Performance Scene, and this, her first collection, is a fun-filled rollercoaster ride through the inside of her head.

For Chen, the personal is political, and the poems tour the gamut of her life in Britain: there are meditations on gender, psychology, Literature, food, class and autobiographical details all mixed and matched in energetic, spiky, punchy language.

Consider this a primer for not only what the Life Political is like in Britain, but also the linguistic equivalent of a high-speed ride through the highways of new British Poetry.

It's fast, furious and fun. And before you know it, your brain has been rewired and filled with new things.

Witty, thought provoking with more than a little tongue in cheek and lashings of humour
