I have looked at many books of this type - this is a no-nonsense but creative approach. It shows an in-depth awareness of the sensory needs children with autism may have, and gives a number of simple yet planned lessons with materials. The author points out that there is much more to art then just paint and proceeds to come up with a lot more materials, most of which can be found in the home, which can be used artistically and in a fun and playful way.
Painting the snowman! Right. That was one of the more out there suggestions, but why not. Now, all we need is some snow....
A good resource to be bought when your child is ready to venture into this area. I was frustrated when my bright little boy didn't initially take to artistic pursuits - now, much later, he's just switching on to them and this is really helpful.

USEFUL Book that helps with Sensory Integration

As a mother of an child with autism, I found Reaching the Child with Autism through Art to be indespensible. The activities are fun and simple and don't take expensive supplies. I feel that these type activities were helpful with my son's sensory integration skills, especially tactile awareness. All the activities are tried and true since the author began teaching in 1968 and had extensive experience from which to draw. I would think that any classroom teacher of children on the autism spectrum would find this book useful but as a homeschooling mom it got us through many days.

Very disappointed when this book arrived. This is geared for older children and should state that. Certainly not aimed for 3 to 4 years old.

Don't Waste Your Money

As an Elementary Art Teacher, I can say to any professional that is on a budget, save your money. This book feels like "jotted" notes in a notebook. Lacks visuals and description. Contains everything you probably already use. Unprofessionally written, unscholarly, lacks resourceful background information and is overall a complete disservice to teachers.
