Product Description

CD Description

* Roger Glenn was one of the regular session crew for the Mizell brothers as they cut a swathe through early 70s jazz-funk with their production work for Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey and Johnny Hammond . Glenn, a talented vibes player and flautist, appeared on some of the biggest jazz records of the decade, such as Donald Byrd's "Blackbyrd" and Johnny Hammond's "Gears". He had started his career in the Army band at Fort Nix in New Jersey playing alongside Grover Washington and Billy Cobham.

* "Reachin'" is the least well known of the Mizell's sought-after productions, possibly made as a thank you to Roger for his sterling work on the brothers' other productions. It is a more latin-influenced LP than many of their recordings. Funky workouts such as the title track and `Kick' mingle with the Latin jazz dancer `Rio'.

* Hard to find on its original vinyl, it is a very sought-after album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure class, 17 Dec 2011

Tight solid beats all the way around. There are no vocals on this album but if you ever dug anything by the Headhunters, John McLaughlin, Lonnie Liston Smith or Bobbi Humphrey, you'll find a lot to enjoy here. Bluesy and soulful, intricate yet smooth, "Reachin'" contains elements of Brazilian jazz funk meandering through and drips 70s jazz/funk. A lot to like here with Glenn on flute, Larry Mizel and Mark Soskin alternating on Rhodes, a fantastic bass and drum combo - even the album art is cool. It's a short album but no slouch work to be found. Nearly 40 years later it's only more apparent how hip these guys were. For the price right now you can't go wrong.

2.0 out of 5 stars ** 1/2 stars--Glenn's Too Late for the Party, 16 Aug 2010
By John L. Hughes, Jr. "hughes_jr" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Reachin' (Audio CD)
Session flautist Roger Glenn got his own shot at fusion stardom with this hard-to-find album produced by the infamous Mizell Brothers (Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey). All the Mizell trademarks are here--wah-wah guitar, boogaloo rhythms, Arp string ensemble washes, Fender Rhodes licks and booming basslines. However, the ususal Mizell passive vocal colorations aren't on this session.

The music here is performed well, especially on the funk/Latin workout "Kick", the soothing "Gloria", and the brief percussion workout "Rezo Chango". The problem here is that when this album was released in 1976, disco and P-funk were the rage. Therefore, the Mizell's blaxploitation soundtrack grooves were passe by three years. Had this album been released in 1973, it would have been right on time.
