Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Digable Planets deliberately disavowed the toughness of hip-hop culture: the trio's leader called himself Butterfly, his foil Ladybug purred like Eartha Kitt and they produced hooks out of lines such as "We're just babies, man". Despite occasional flashes of sorrow (like the pro-choice recitation "La Femme Fétal"), the group is happy and laid back on this debut, with tracks made out of old jazz records and finger-snaps, and words that draw on 50s hipster slang. Reachin' spawned the Grammy-winning single "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)", and after this album, their joyous BlueNote-and-black-lights bounce lost some of its novelty. --Douglas Wolk

their rejection of the macho hip-hop stance, so familiar to commercial US hip-hop, is very refreshing.
How often do you get to call a band of three rappers sweet and genuinely funny? Combine this with their music (old school beats, laid back jazzy vibes) and this is a great album.
For those who believe that hip-hop ran it's course in violence,
misogyny and base stupidity about ten years ago.

Brilliant - these guys are the kings of slick, funky hip-hop for me. If your foot doesn't tap or your booty move to this album, you're probably dead. Very relaxed - good to chill you out.

At the height of gangster rap mania there was an antidote - this seductive blend of hip-hop, funk & jazz, delivered with a unique casual cool. I don't know of a better rap LP.
