This book covers all aspects of expectation and reality for a returning short-term missionary. It offers advice on how to make return to your home church and country easier, and how to help prevent the sudden deflation, and subsequent criticism, experienced by some people after a term in Christian work, or ministry. I am buying further copies for people about to return home, my pastor, and those invloved in Missionary support.

This book was on my 'must read' list as I'm going to be returning from a 2-year period of mission soon. It is an easy read and fairly good. It also made me realize how fortunate I am to have a supportive church who have been interested in what I have been doing and dedicated to supporting me in an organized and caring way throughout my time overseas. However, for me the book's shortcomings lay in the fact that it assumed that all missionaries a) worked in teams and b) were in the business of evangelisation of a local culture. Neither applied to me, so I felt that my situation (as a professional working for an indigenous Christian organisation, with the clear remit NOT to proselytize but to show my faith by the way I live) was not reflected as an option. It is also dated (although the Kindle edition is dated 2011, it was first published in 1992, it talks about tape recorders and slide shows!). I think it would be worth an update by the author to reflect both more modern times and also the diversity of mission service undertaken today, so I hope that he will see this review.

Great Book for People Returning Home 27 Mar 2000
By Justin Follower - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
We just returned from Russia when my father gave me this book, and said, 'read it'. That was good advice.

Returning from an extended period in a foreign country can be a difficult experience. This book describes problems you can fall into, and how to avoid them.

It talks about how people fail to notice you've even been gone. Or don't seem to care that much what you did. When you understand these are common experiences, it helps those problems become a lot less personal.

Overall, we've applied the principles of this book, and haven't experienced most of the 'reverse culture shock' that many do. And we've been home nearly a year now, so we'll probably do okay.

Good book to give a returning, or retiring missionary, as a gift.

Essential! 13 Jan 2004
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

I always keep many copies of this book and give it out to everyone! It is perfect for both short-term missionaries and career missionaries who are returning home to the US.
Returning home is such a challenge, and most of the issues one faces unfortunately are all to common. It is wonderful to read this book and realize you aren't alone, that people have the same experiences. Believe me, you aren't the only one!

Not just for missionaries 23 Feb 2007
By K. Portice - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
We received this book before we returned from the mission field 10 years ago and found it very helpful. We are re-reading it now to be ready to welcome our daughter's boyfriend home from the war. We haven't found anything else as helpful.
