4.0 out of 5 stars Fun for all ages 17 April 2009

Durability: 3.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
This game incoporates mental and physical tasks and challenges. I tried the game with adult family members to start with. Although it is quite a simple game we did enjoy it and have some real 'laugh out loud' moments during the more physical challenges. Seeing my daughter hopping around a target whilst imitating a chicken is a sight I won't forget! When we tried it with children we found that the recommended age range is about right. A six year old struggled but the nine year old loved it. Some of the question based tasks are a little tough for younger players.
The one major flaw found was that the game is not turn based which means, theoretically, if a player was skilled enough then they could complete the game with no-one else having had a turn. A simple enough solution is to ignore those instructions have each player having one throw of the dice then moving on to the next player.
Not the best game ever but certainly good for a laugh.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality, silly, family amusment 27 Jan 2009

Imagine the scene in the game design office....

"Right lads, we need a new game, something which will really get sales moving."
"Errm, how about we get a few concepts from other games and see what happens when you combine them all?"
"Yes, and lets ditch a few traditional concepts to balance it out"
"Won't this lead to confusion and more than a few family arguments?"
"of course, but that's what family board games are all about, lots of bits, lots of rules, a bit of ambiguity and Bob's your uncle."
"Great, you've got two weeks"

This doesn't sound like the best start to a game but surprisingly it's more fun and chaos than a barrel full of live monkeys. Taking concepts from trivia games, physical challenge games, bidding/gambling games, and mental agility games, setting them all against the clock and then getting rid of the idea of rigid turn based play, Chalenj! Manages to deliver a whole lot of fun and the range of challenges prevents any one person from dominating the game leading to a balanced few hours of amusement and anarchy with lots of friendly arguments and noise. It looks complicated to set up but is actually a breeze and quick to start. The game works best with all 6 players but we've managed fine with less.

Genuinely, a great laugh and a LOT of fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Badly explained but fun to play! 6 Aug 2009

I've had Chalenj (pronounced - sha-lonj) sitting in a cupboard for many months now, never quite finding the right time to bring it out and get to grips with a new board game. But I finally did it over a cheese board and several bottles of wine this past weekend, and how glad I am to have done it! Within 5 mins I was trying to catch a ball between my knees (fellas take care) and moonwalking at speed around my living room. Chalenj is basically 'categories' for anyone who has played that particular game. Each participant, on controlling the die, selects from one of the mental, physical, random or difficult challenges. These are very varied and quite bizarre. They then state that they can do the alloted task a certain number of times in 30 seconds. They can then pass the bidding to their right or left and bidding continues until someone slaps down the Chalenj! glove. If they fail, the challenger wins and takes control, if they succeed then they take control. Simple! And fun!
However, there are some concerns. The challenges are quiet ambiguous at times and do not spell out very clearly the terms within which you are bound. This is fairly easily overcome by agreeing the terms amongst yourselves before the challenge is attempted. However, it can certainly lead to some lively debates! Perhaps not a game to be played with people who are shy and retiring, nor the overly-competitive boistrous types!
In all, a great fun game to be played with friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Let the games begin... 31 Jan 2009

Chalenj is a hilariously entertaining board game based around 4 different chalenj areas (physical, mental, mystery and personal). There is a 30-second time limit for each chalenj and the person who predicts they can do the best takes it on with the turnover of the egg timer. The aim is to move around the board conquering the chalenjes before your opponents to win the chalenj cup! Chalenjes may involve the use of the great quality die, chalenj ball, chalenj discs (involving numbers and pictures), and 2 plastic chalenj mats (one with a target and one with 4 coloured shapes.)

This is where the fun begins as you chalenj your family and friends to take part in tasks from the straightforward (how many words can you name beginning with the letter q,) to the strange (with your head on the centre of the target mat how many full rotations can you do,) to the downright impossible (standing one pace away from the target mat, simultaneously throw the die and ball onto the centre circle.)

I played this as a 2-player game, lasting around 45 minutes, however I imagine it would be even more fun with 6 players after a few drinks! Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fine new game 27 Jan 2009

You'll see from the game description that this is a board game involving a range of mental and physical challenges - within 30 seconds - and comes with a board, a couple of smallish plastic mats etc to assist with this.

While this should be a simple game I have to say that we were all a little confused by the instructions when players bid/challenge others on the number of activities can be completed in the 30 seconds. Also the game needs a fair bit of room. If you are required to 'hop, skip, and jump' across the room as many times as possible in 30 seconds you need space. Equally, if you are to close your eyes and turn around in circles 10 times in 30 seconds you'll need space. The plastic mats take up floor room as well.

I think the game is best played in larger numbers and, for adults at least, when in high spirits - either because of a family event like a birthday or through the consumption of spirits! The action elements require extrovert activities!

Overall the game is fun but I'm not sure it brings much that's new so it's OK and at a reduced price is worth buying.
