Generally reckoned to be one of the worst Neil Young and Crazy Horse albums, this deserves reassessment. Sure it has it's low points, 'T-bone' is okay for the first few minutes but goes on for too long and some of the playing is a bit loose even by Crazy Horse standards. On the up side 'Southern Pacific' is one of the best songs Neil Young has ever written and the sheer sonic barrage of 'Shots' gives most of 'Rust Never Sleeps' a run for its money. The rest of the album is a fairly raucous and somewhat eccentric selection of songs dedicated to surfers, old cars and ageing rockers. Business as usual then (only louder).

Re-ac-tor the oft-maligned 1981 offering from Neil & Crazy Horse is nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be, in fact i think it's rather good. As long as you approach it with an open mind and accept it for what it is a straight-ahead, no frills rock album then you might be pleasantly surprised. Defiantely worth giving it a chance! HIGHLIGHTS: Get Back On It / Southern Pacific / Shots.

With the release of On the Beach ,simply Youngs finest moment there had to be down side, and unfortunately it was the coincided release of this effort from 1981. I don't know if this was released as a contractual obligation for Reprise before switching to Geffen or as seems more likely the distraction at the time of caring for his sick son.
However it represents the nadir of his career (and of Crazy Horses) the songs are lazy especially the excruciating "T-Bone" where they just plod through each number almost on automatic pilot- that is however until the suprise conclusion- "Shots" where Young suddenly seems to wake up and plays and sings with passion in equal measure this though is too late to save what must be among his poorest offerings.

Extremely poor...awful at best
How any reviewer can compare this shoddy release to 'Time Fades Away' frankly stumps me.

The other reviews hereabouts lay out the main points, this was the end of his first stint on Reprise, the album is largely a fuzzed-out, rapid-fire ragbag of rockers notable mainly... Read more

Well worth a listen or two (but probably not three)
I quite like "Reactor" and always have done, but more for its quirkiness than the timeless, inspiring quality of the songs or musicianship! Read more

Like many others, I never understood the flak that this album received. The lonnnnnggggg T-Bone track is just classic NY&CH - raw, churning, chundering, dirty, sprawling, extended... Read more

time is a great healer
Bought this album on initial release and as far as I was concerned it stank. He has really lost it this time, I thought ,so the album was binned. Read more

Going for it!
If you want a smooth, sophisticated, purist sound then look elsewhere. If you want to listen to something raw, wild, rough and ready then this will be it. Read more

Perhaps his most undeservedly under-rated album
I really can't understand the flak this album takes. This is a good full-on Neil and the Horse sonic attack. The songs are memorable, if not in the top rank of the Young canon. Read more

Not good...
The recent re-release of four of Neil Young’s “lost albums” on CD begs the question why haven’t they been released before? Read more

Disaster
A waste of time bringing this out on CD.The only decent track is "Shots" which has some great lyrics, but this song is far superior when he performs it on acoustic guitar! Read more
