Razor Sharp Rhythm, NOT2CD425

"Krupa and Rich" is a studio album by two of the most famous of jazz drummers the legendary Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich which was eleased by Norman Granz on the Clef Records label in 1956. The recording session took place on 1st November 1955.
Gene Krupa 1909-1973 & Buddy Rich 1917-1987
Side A:
1."Buddy's Blues" (Buddy Rich) - 10:27
2."Bernie's Tune" (Bernie Miller, Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller) - 13:54
Side B:
1."Gene's Blues" (Gene Krupa) - 7:44
2."Sweethearts on Parade" (Carmen Lombardo, Charles Newman) - 8:47
3."I Never Knew" (Ted Fio Rito, Gus Kahn) - 8:51
Personnel: Gene Krupa - drums; Buddy Rich - drums; Oscar Peterson - piano; Ray Brown - double bass; Herb Ellis - guitar; Roy Eldridge - trumpet; Dizzy Gillespie - trumpet; Illinois Jacquet - tenor saxophone & Flip Phillips - tenor saxophone, clarinet

Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich play on two different tracks each and play together only on "Bernie's Tune".

Krupa and Rich would record again this time for Verve Records, their album being entitled Burnin' Beat which was recorded January 18-19, 1962, New York City.

Side A:
1."Jumpin' at the Woodside" (Count Basie) - 2:20
2."It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" (Duke Ellington, Irving Mills) - 2:35
3."Duet" - 4:32
4."Night Train" (Ellington) - 3:21
5."King Porter Stomp" (Jelly Roll Morton) - 3:24
Side B:
1."Perdido" (Ervin Drake, Hans J. Lengsfelder, Juan Tizol) - 2:24
2."Evolution" - 9:20
3."Hawaiian War Chant" (Ralph Freed, Leleiohaku, Ray Noble) - 5:30
Personnel:
Gene Krupa - drums; Buddy Rich- drums; Danny Bank - flute; John Bunch - piano; Don Goldie - trumpet; Al Stewart - trumpet; Nick Travis - trumpet; Joe Wilder - trumpet & Creed Taylor - producer

The first CD sounds to be in mono and the second is I believe in stereo. These sound like transfers from LP to CD and there is some slight distortion when you listen through headphones. The albums present 2 of the finest drummers separately and together and this is a real treat for collectors. A piece of jazz history. The albums do not appear to have been available together previously. The liner notes are by Not Now Music regular writer Peter Gamble. Nicely illustrated with original album cover artwork on the liner. The second album was recorded after the Gene Krupa Story film starring Sal Mineo had been released. A chance to obtain both original albums at a very reasonable price.

This double disc is a veritable bargain as it presents two albums by two of the best jazz drummers of all time for around a fiver. I had not heard the "Krupa and Rich" album previously so was pleasantly surprised to hear such excellent reproduction of a recording that's now over 50 years old.

With regard to "Burnin' Beat", I have been interested in drums and the playing thereof since childhood. My dad used to work with a chap called John who played drums in a jazz band, and when he found out I was interested he invited me down to listen to his group practice - quite something for a lad of 5 or 6 years of age.

Some time later we emigrated to South Africa and when we were leaving, John gave me his copy of "Burnin' Beat" as a leaving present : it's long since been worn out, so it's great to be able to hear it again after all these years. Personal favourites are "Duet" and "Evolution". Happy memories have been revived again!
